Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Melee
Madness...
Super Smash Bros Melee is probably the most common subject in my
mailbox. Many good questions arrive, but unfortunately some people
are still insisting that they've unlocked Sonic & Tails, or
some other outrageous character. I'm not sure why people make these
false claims... I'm not even sure if they realize how foolish they
make themselves by submitting misinformation to someone who isn't
going to believe them anyway. I really should start posting names
and e-mail addresses on the website, that way the real Melee
fans can harass these people for attempting to spread bogus rumors...
Now, onto the real messages - The ones that involve honest curiosity
instead of pure stupidity. (Ok, I threw one stupid one down there...
Try and guess which one. If you need a hint, think Sonic & Tails)

Hey.
. .the picture in the multiplayer part of your Goldeneye 007
website confuses me. . . it shows statue in the multi level select
screen. . . .is there a way to do this without a gameshark?
It's actually just an image that was created
for the Multiplayer section of the site, so that visitors could
choose a level by clicking on it. There are Gameshark codes for
practically everything, so nearly everything can be modified to
create 'impossible' screenshots. But that individual screenshot
was made with a graphics editing program.

Hey Detstar, in Super Smash Bros
Melee is it possible to unlock the Lip Stick trophy in the
Lottery? Cause I've gotten to the point where I can't win anymore
new trophies in the Lottery, and I also don't have the Lip Stick.
So what's the deal?
Unlike most of the other item trophies,
the Lip's Stick can't be unlocked via the Trophy Lottery. To earn
this trophy you'll need to perform a 21 hit combo in training mode.
The easiest (and cheapest) way to do this, is probably by heading
to using the Fire Flower in Peach's Castle. By pinning your opponent
between yourself and the middle wall of the castle, you can repeatedly
burn them with the Fire Flower, scoring lots of consecutive hits
and technically creating a combo. Just experiment with the right
amount of space and positioning needed to trap the computer character
and burn them to no end.

hi,
in Perfect Dark i just finished skedar ruins battle
shrine,on co-op mode though,at 7:08 am.
my heart was pounding soo hard and the cinema after was sooooooo
cool,by the way,in the cinema, when Joanna was stuck under the fallen
pillars, was the skedar leader grabbing her leg or was it another
skedar?
Congrats on finishing Battle Shrine. It
can be a pretty tough mission, and those vicious Skedar certainly
aren't creatures that should be taken lightly.
As for the Skedar that grabs Joanna as she tries to escape, I'm
pretty sure that it's the Skedar Leader. We can't completely see
for sure, but Joanna makes some kind of comment that seems to imply
her anger with that particular Skedar. Although that part isn't
a definite clue, I'm assuming it's the Skedar Leader because it's
who she just finished battling with. And just like in so many horror
movies, the monster just won't seem to die at the end.

Hello my name is Jeff, and I have somewhat
completed Super Smash Bros. Melee. A friend of mine
at school tells me that Fierce Diety and Majoras Wrath from the
Legend Of Zelda Majoras mask are actual hidden characters that can
be earned. Is this true, or is my friend just an idiot?
Unfortunately, there are no additional hidden characters in the game that aren't featured on the website. And yes, your friend is an idiot. A complete and total idiot.

I was recently in a pawn shop and saw
a Goldeneye 007 game with the 007 level saved on it
(the red check mark next to it.) What I want to know is how is this
done? I have tried almost everything and I can't do it. What is the
secret? I mean if it is saved on one game then it is possible for
me to do it as well...right? Please let me know. Thanks so much.
Hmm...
It's not possible, as far as I know. Regardless of what settings you
complete a mission with, you should never receive a red checkmark
for completing 007 mode.
But if you're saying it's there, I can only assume that someone has
messed around with the game to make it appear. Cheat devices like
Gamesharks can be used to manipulate the memory, but until this point
I'd only ever seen it done to complete missions without playing them,
as well as unlocking the cheat options that remain saved even when
the Gameshark is removed.
The only explanation that I can think of here, is that someone may
have used a Gameshark and found the memory locations of the values
for a completed difficulty level, and discovered a way to permanently
"complete" 007 mode. |

Hi my name is Roger, and I think you're
site is one of the greatest sites ever! It's already the best Super
Smash Bros Melee site ever! I am going to get the game tomorrow
and I can't wait.
You're site inspired me greatly and now i'm sure to have MUCH more
ours of fun playing the game.
I have the first super smash bros and I already think that's a great
game,so then I think the melee version is really super cool! You're
site is full of information about the game. It's really a GREAT
site.
Thnx and bye.
Melee really is a great all-round game
for the Cube, with tons of replay value. It's also one of those
few games that practically anybody can play and enjoy. Apparently,
the Melee site at Detstar has convinced many players to go out and
buy the game. I wonder if the people at Nintendo realize this...
If anyone on the inside is reading, feel free to equip Detstar with
demo versions of any future SSB projects. They will certainly be
put to good use.

Dear Det,
Is it safe to consider that the Goldeneye 007 page
is dead?
By now you've probably already seen the anniversary update to the Goldeneye website... But I find it kinda ironic that you sent this message about four hours before the update was made.
Due to the amount of content the Goldeneye site has, there's not
a whole ton of new stuff to add. And when I do have extra time to
work on Detstar stuff despite my busy schedule, it's normally updates
for the more recent games.
So Goldeneye certainly isn't dead. It's still played every day by
hardcore fans all around the world. But unfortunately, updates to
the Goldeneye site at Detstar won't be as frequent as some of the
newer games.

How
do you get Jon Stewart and the set of the Daily Show as shown on the
picture of the website for Super Smash Bros Melee on
Game cube and same with Toad?
In addition
to looking at all the pretty screenshots featured on the website,
it's often helpful to read some of the text that goes with it...
Obviously the Daily Show (and Jon Stewart for that matter) cannot
be found in Melee, and that screenshot was just a piece of artwork
that was submitted to the website. Same goes for those fake screenshots
of Toad.

Hi. I discovered your Goldeneye
007 site some time ago, but while rereading it today, I just
thought of something I've wondered about for awhile. See, on my copy
(purchased used), one of the folders has some rather odd best times
on certain missions. The only one that I remember right now (I'm at
work, so I can't really check it...) is that the previous owner somehow
got the time for the Statue on (I believe) 00 Agent to be saved, I
kid you not, as 8 seconds. I've tried a few theories, and none of
them worked out. Now, the realization I had came from your mentioning
on the site that "anything in Goldeneye can be accessed by a
Gameshark, because the game can't tell if you're using one or not."
So, basically, I was wondering if there are codes that would make
permanently recording a best time like that possible.
Although it's physically impossible to complete the Statue in 8 seconds,
it's true that practically anything is possible with a Gameshark.
There's a code that sets all your objectives to be complete, as well
as codes to modify Bond's starting point to make him closer to the
exit. In the case of the Statue, I'm assuming the "All Objectives
Completed" code was used. With this code activated, the player
would probably need to just run to the exit gates - which could easily
be done in 8 seconds. |

hey in Super Smash Bros Melee,
i think i found a way to unlock sonic&tails! the way you u try
to unlock them is go to cruel melee and beat 20 wire frame things
and end the run then sonic&tails will chalenge you! then beat
them and you get 'em!
You think you found a way... Or, you just found an old April Fool's
issue of EGM magazine under your bed.
I'm hoping that you're just gullible enough to believe what you
read in that issue... But if you're honestly trying to convince
anyone that you have personally unlocked either of these two characters,
then you should probably roll that magazine up and smack yourself
in the head with it.
Next
time, instead of simply reciting EGM's bogus claim, try to come
up with something more original.

i think you have special fonts for Smash
Bros Melee, what are these ?
I'm
not completely sure what you mean by special fonts, unless you meant
the "Super Smash Bros Melee" text artwork that appears on
the site layout. The first three words are actually written in Times
New Roman. It doesn't look like it, because the letters were given
extra width. This makes them stand out and look more dominant than
the "plain and boring" traditional form of Times New Roman.
As for the 'Melee' part, that text is simply Arial Black. |
