Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Madness...
More mail, and more of my responses. As new things are discovered
by visitors, they often send them my way... So if you notice a particular
piece of into that isn't posted on the gamesites, it could be worth
sending in. Questions seem to be the most common thing to arrive
in my mailbox, so feel free to send those too. Of course I can't
offer a reply to everyone, but if you're curious, it's often worth
asking...

I
was checking the "Interesting
Stuff" page for Super Smash Bros Melee and I saw
that you mentioned the picture in the "Mute city" level. You can
see it with no problems in the "Trophy gallery"; in the "Mute city"
Trophy. You don't have to play the level to watch it; and this is
an easier way to check it. Hope you enjoy it.
|
|
Well
I'll be damned... I never messed around with the camera angles on
this trophy, and I never thought about "tricking" the
angle to get closeups of the objects inside.
Using this method, it's possible to get a great view of everything
inside the city.
This allowed me to get a great snapshot of the F-Zero GX poster,
and at the perfect camera angle too. Thanks for sending this technique.

I was wondering what makes you chose
the games to cover on your site?
Many of the game choices appear to be completely random, with some
of the games not being related to one another at all. It pretty much
boils down to what I personally enjoy, which is often based on my
past experiences as a gamer. There's no fun in putting together pages
about a game that I'm not really interested in.
Goldeneye
007
The very first gamesite, which was all that I had been planning
at the time. I wasn't even planning a website - I was just enjoying
EVERYTHING about the game, from the missions, to Multiplayer,
to fooling around with the game's cheat options. Basically,
I'd been playing the game for years, and decided that with all
the information I was gathering, other fans might be interested...
That turned out to be the biggest understatement I could have
made, because the site became incredibly popular very quickly,
despite the fact that Goldeneye had already been out for a couple
years. |
Perfect
Dark
While I was running the Goldeneye website, I officially
stated that "I will not be creating a Perfect Dark website".
But as the game's release date drew near, I was drawn into the
Dark side. The improved graphics and AI were welcome changes,
as was the revamped Multiplayer mode. But somehow or other,
the shiny new feel of Perfect Dark wore off, and many fans (as
well as the Webmaster) returned to Goldeneye. |
Super
Smash Bros Melee
3 years later, Melee was the best game to be released for
the GameCube so far. I wanted to buy a GameCube so I could enjoy
future titles that were on the horizon. So, Melee was the game
I chose to bring home with me. I couldn't believe the depth
of this game, especially the variety of play modes, impressive
character selection, secret unlockables, and the huge gallery
of trophies... Plus the fact that the replay value is nearly
endless, making it one of the most addictive Multiplayer games
since Goldeneye. |
The
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
One of the most anticipated releases for the Nintendo GameCube.
Being a huge fan of Ocarina of Time, no one will ever know just
how close I came to covering Ocarina instead of Goldeneye for
my first gamesite. There was no question in my mind that I simply
had to own Wind Waker... I reserved a copy and was willing to
push and shove my way through anyone just to make sure that
I got my copy the same day it was released. (Sorry to anyone
out there who got kicked in the head)

F-Zero
GX
I took a bit of a chance on this game, and I'm glad that
I did. I only had limited experience with the F-Zero series,
but I was really impressed with the previews of GX. I bought
the game without playing it first, which is a huge gamble for
someone who doesn't have a lot of extra cash to throw around.
I was hooked very quickly on this game, once again lured in
by the number of play modes and secret extras to be unlocked.
Very cool how there's so much stuff to unlock, and the difficulty
level ramps up quite high, meaning that only the most skilled
and determined players will unlock everything. |
Mario
Kart Double Dash
(Not a gamesite yet... Maybe after several more pages?)
As I'm sure was mentioned on the site before, Super Mario Kart
was the reason why I first bought my SNES... Likewise with Mario
Kart 64 and the Nintendo 64. Being a big Mario Kart fan, I simply
had to own this game. I found MKDD to be quite challenging,
but still managed to beat the game and unlock everything rather
quickly... The races themselves are so frantic that practically
anything can happen. The wild excitement of Mario Kart Double
Dash makes it fun to play for hours. |
TimeSplitters
2
(Again, it's not a gamesite... But there are many pages
on Detstar) Sadly, I didn't get into TS2 soon enough. Granted,
it wasn't too late to make a gamesite, but my schedule at the
time simply did not have the flexibility to begin a new project
like this. The spirit of Goldeneye lives on, long after the
Rareware company had sold out. Former members of the Goldeneye
team helped deliver TS2, and the same exciting feel from half
a decade before is brought back to life. |

i don't know whether this has been
posted or not but in Super Smash Bros Melee, when
you start a match on kongo jungle or jungle japes stage at the start
after the announcer says "go!" you can hear someone in the background
say "Samus". i don't know whether this has been posted or not (or
if it is something to do with the DK games) but i just wanted to
post it.
That's completely new to me... I checked
it out, and name "Samus" can just barely be heard as a whisper somewhere
behind the background music. I personally found it clearer to in
the Jungle Japes stage. Not sure what this means, or whether the
random whispering coincidentally forms something that sounds like
"Samus".
Something else about the music in the Kongo Jungle, is the DK Rap
from Donkey Kong 64... The rap from DK64 mentioned Donkey Kong as
"one hell of a guy", while the song in SSBM calls him "one heck
of a guy"... The strange part is that DK64 was rated "E" for everyone...
While SSBM is rated "Teen" (13+). Surely everyone has been exposed
to a few naughty words by age 13... If not, they sure have been
living one hell of a sheltered life.

why
is the guard with the scar-face always featured in most of the beta
shots of Goldeneye? was he the only face for guards
in beta?
You guessed it. At one point during the
game's development, all guards had the scar-face. Later on, it seemed
that all of the guards had the face with curly blonde hair. Luckily
before the game was finished, four random heads were loaded at the
beginning of any given mission, and these four random heads would
appear on various guards throughout the level.

in Super Smash Bros Melee
while playing as peach, keep using her down + B attack, it is incredibly
rare but every now and then she will pull out a Mr. Saturn instead
of the usual vegetable. i have done it a few times and can safely
say that it is totally random.
I have heard of Peach pulling Bob-ombs with this move, and one person has even mentioned the Beam Sword. But you're the first
person who has mentioned that she can also pull a Mr. Saturn. As you mentioned, it seems as if there's no other explanation
except that it's a completely random event. In many attempts, I haven't been able to do it. If I ever do manage to make it
happen, I sure hope that I'm recording a video at the time...

Hurry, talk about the New Perfect
Dark Game, It sounds really cool!
Perfect Dark Zero was a section on Detstar.com
that existed a few years ago, when the game was going to be released
for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. But then Rareware kept their
loyal fans in perfect darkness, offering no comments for about a
year. Then out of nowhere, they made a shocking announcement about
the sale of their shares to the Microsoft Corporation, and stated
that the next Perfect Dark game would be exclusively for the Microsoft
X-Box.
I do not own an X-Box, nor do I have any plans to buy one. Video game systems cost a lot of money, and I've got my own bills
to worry about.
The release date for the next Perfect Dark game was also pushed from 2002 to 2004. If memory serves me correctly, it's the
year 2005 now, and fans don't seem any closer to playing the game now than they were five years ago... I sure am glad that I
bought a GameCube, and got to enjoy incredible first person shooters like Metroid Prime...
Most of the key members who were responsible for the success of
Goldeneye and Perfect Dark have since left Rareware, and become
part of Free Radical Design. In my opinion, Free Radical has created
the best First Person Shooter of the millennium with TimeSplitters
2. And with the release of TimeSplitters 3 coming very soon to all
of the Next Generation systems, the new Perfect Dark game is fading
into a long-lost memory.

It
is impossible for somebody to shoot all the credits in Super
Smash Bros Melee to unlock Toad if he was a real character!
Even though it's
could be possible to hit all the credits, it's definitely easier
said than done. The rumor about unlocking Toad by using this method
has proven to be false. When I first played the game, I believed
that there might be something special to be unlocked by hitting
all of the credits or earning a highscore. It seems as if that mini-game
was included just for fun, but I don't know if anyone has actually
has managed to hit every single credit that flies by on screen...
This daunting task seems damn-near impossible... But I'll bet some
crackpot out there is willing to stay up all night and give it a
try. Afterwards, he'll probably need to be committed to an institution
or something...

Your site is the greatest site ever
and I was wondering what are button cheats and what do they do?
this is changing the subject but Halo 2 is the greatest game for
X-box even though it is evil i don't think of the fact that Bill
Gates made it and that Goldeneye and Perfect
Dark are the greatest games ever. If you ever get an Evil
X-box would you make a webpage for Halo and PDZ?
There are numerous cheats to unlock, as well as countless different
codes you can enter with a Gameshark... But the term " button cheats"
refers to codes that can be entered simply by using your controller.
Button codes were found for Goldeneye, but Rareware denies any existence
of such codes in Perfect Dark.
Don't expect to see a Detstar website for Halo or Perfect Dark Zero...
Halo (as well as Halo 2) are quite good apparently, but there are
many great games out there that will never be featured here. In
addition to the incredible amount of time and effort it takes to
create and maintain a gamesite, I simply will never own any of those
games.

can you try and update more often, i love the site and i constantly check back for updates
Updates on Detstar happen once a week, usually on Monday. Anywhere
from 15-20 hours of my time goes into these updates. And with my
busy schedule, it's virtually impossible to update more than once
a week. I would like to update more often than that, but I still
haven't won the lottery yet... So I still can't afford to sit back
and devote my entire life to Detstar.

just
wanted to say your metal mystery pic from Super Smash Bros Melee
is actually 4 metal kirbys standing beside each other
Yes, that's exactly what the creator told
me afterwards. It was a neat looking screenshot, but I had absolutely
no idea what the heck I was looking at. I can clearly see it now,
but it's always easy to realize that afterwards... |

Seriously, how old are you? I speculate around 19... Older than me...
Speculations, assumptions,
and accusations! Perhaps the fact that I choose not to reveal my
age is what draws people's attention to it... And perhaps these
kind of details are the types of things that will only be revealed
in Detstar: The Book.
(Please note that "Detstar: The Book" does NOT exist, and
it will NOT be available soon in a bookstore near you)
Regardless of my age, I've been able to connect and share my love
of games with people from all ages, from all parts of the globe.
I receive e-mails from people who are six, right up to grandparents
who are sharing their gaming experience with their grandchildren.
I'm not completely sure what age a "typical" Detstar visitor is,
although I expect the most common visitors are in mid-to-late high
school, where they still have the freedom to enjoy videogames on
a daily basis... When the real world comes to snatch you up, my
advice is to run... Run for you life!
(Please note that the advice to run will probably lead nowhere,
so it's probably NOT a good idea)
