Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

I
was recently browsing your site and came across the Debug Menu for
Super Smash Bros Melee which looks really cool. As I'm
told, it edits the game in ways I wasn't able to dream of. I also
rang Nintendo.co.uk Customer Services but they weren't able to give
much info Could you give me any advice on the Debug Menu - I want
it megabad. I'll try not to be disappointed if you send me bad news
To gain access
to the debug menu, you need to have the Action Replay cheat device.
It's a combination of a special disk and card to use on your GameCube,
to enter codes before you begin playing a game. The device can be
found in many stores that sell video games.
Nintendo's
Customer Service would definitely not want to tell you anything
about the Debug Menu...
It's a special menu that can be accessed only with the Action Replay
cheat device... And since the device allows you to manipulate what
happens in your games, Action Replay is not approved or endorsed
by Nintendo.

Det,
this isn't really a suggestion but I noticed behind Link in the Zelda
Wind Waker pic you used for the 3/7/05 update, there appears
to be a ghost of Princess Zelda attempting to kill Link with the Ocarina
of Time Master Sword! Take good look just beside him in the direction
his eyes are pointing. You'll see.
Three few different screenshots were blended
together to make that background... I see the swords, but I can't
seem to figure out where you're seeing Princess Zelda... She's not
in the picture, but there's definitely an evil figure lurking around...
Does anyone
else out there have a question or comment about any of the graphics
that have been used on the Detstar homepage? If you have a favorite
piece of artwork, feel fee to share your thoughts.

How
do you get King Boo in Super Smash Bros Melee?
The snapshot of King Boo isn't something that you can actually see
in Melee... It's a unique piece of artwork that was submitted by a
visitor of the website.

You
should cover Soul Calibur 2 on your site (GCN version
of course) it's quite a good game, and i think many people would benefit
from a section
PS why do you make the different sections of detstar (ie. ssbm.detstar.com)
why not detstar.com/ssbm?
For starters, I don't
even own Soul Calibur 2. Just played it once, and snapped a few screenshots.
There are dozens of games that deserve some coverage on Detstar, but
I'm pretty much sticking with what's already here. It takes hours
to get to know a game well enough to cover it, and many additional
hours to put together some content. I'm stretched far enough with
my busy schedule, but will occasionally post a few screenshots of
a new game. (IE Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil 4, Soul Calibur 2)..
As for those subdomains,
that's a good question. The subdomains were created when Detstar
very first opened.. That's the way it was set up, and it's too difficult
to change now. The individual links on all the pages would need
to be changed, plus those URLs are indexed by different search engines.
So, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and SSBM will stay that way... But
any future gamesites will have a normal URL.

I
have had Super Smash Bros Melee for 2 years and realized
if you play as peach and go to mushroom kingdom 1 (the one whith lots
of bricks) you go to the platform held by string and do peaches taunt
and you can see her legs and bloomers and her dress goes REALLY high! |
|
You
should try it out! its real funny P.S. if you be princess daisy
(the tanned version of peach) the legs are tanned than others. Also
iv discovered that if you be the white dressed peach her legs are
white... Strange i say...
By the way my name is Alma , yes im a girl. I hope you like my funny
discovery
Until nextime, bye!

I've
received many reports from visitors about Peach's pink underwear,
but this is the first time anyone has told me about the other colors
that she wears.
In the snapshot of her in yellow, it looks like she's slapping Marth
for trying to get a peek up her dress.

In
Super Smash Bros Melee I thought u said ditto changed
into the character that threw it mine isnt working. WHY?!?!?!?
I believe that
I posted that quote from the official Nintendo Power guide to SSBM,
that states that Ditto would fight alongside your character... But
the guide was obviously written before the game was finished.
When you obtain
Ditto with the Action Replay code, he doesn't actually turn into
your character. He appears, then vanishes as quickly as he came...
This leads me to believe that he would turn into your character,
but that part of the game's programming has since been removed.
So because he doesn't do his transformation, he disappears instead.

Hi,
was just readin the F-Zero GX Interesting Stuff section
and I noticed that you mentioned the machines have scratched paintwork,
but the AX machines (not inc. Deathborn) don't have scratches, they're
in perfect condition, presumably since they haven't raced before..
Yes that's true, which is quite odd. I don't know if Nintendo inteded
to do this, or whether it was a mistake. It's possible that the AX
machines were added much later in the game's development, and as a
result, they may have missed the wear and tear detailing that the
original machines received. |
Hi,
I just noticed something strange about Super Smash Bros. Melee.
I saw your information about the different faces on Peach's vegetables.
Once, I was playing in Multiplayer mode with items set to none, I
was Peach. I used her vegetable attack and plucked up a bob-omb instead
of a vegetable. Then, later I was in Camera mode and I picked up a
Mr. Saturn using her vegetable attack. I was hoping you could investigate
this and possibly get a picture of Peach in the process of plucking
an item. I think the item selection is random and has a very rare
chance of occuring, but it happened to me twice before. Thanks,
tell me if you find anything out.
I've received dozens of e-mails about this,
but had yet to see it firsthand... After pulling hundreds of vegetables,
I had not seen Peach pull anything other than a vegetable. But after
reading your e-mail, I was encouraged to try it once more. So I started
a match, and on my third try, Peach pulled a bob-omb instead of a
vegetable.
Although a
screenshot of Peach holding a bob-omb proves nothing, I had decided
to press record before I started playing just to be safe...
So, a short 5 second video clip is available here: http://ssbm.detstar.com/stuff/peachpullsbobomb.WMV
(The clip is in Windows Media Video format, and the size is 280kb)
In addition
to the Bob-omb and Mr. Saturn, Peach can apparently also pull a
Beam Sword. Also, someone has reported that this rare trick can
even happen when items are turned off. Just as you suspected, these
bonus items for Peach are completely random, and highly unlikely...
But it does happen.

You
know that screenshot from Super Smash Bros Melee with
the crazy hand fighting giga bowser on the foutain of dreams showing
an example of debug can the crazy hand die by geting hit or just
floating off the stage on purpose?
In my testing while using Master hand,
it doesn't appear as if you can move him at all. While technically
playing "as" him, he's simply stuck in the air, unable
to attack... I don't even believe that he can be killed.
Giga
Bowser on the other hand, is fully playable, and the controls for
him are the same as Bowser.

I don't know if your entire income
comes from the detstar members who pay for that or if you have another
source of income but I would suggest making that feature free since
its already a low price and not many people have credit cards or
cheques to pay for it.
An entirely free website would certainly
please everyone... But a website with the the size and traffic of
Detstar certainly cannot operate for free. Slowly but surely, Detstar
has evolved into a very costly hobby. With this expensive hosting
setup, the Members Section was created to give fans a chance to
support the site, and reward them with some bonus material.
My income certainly does not come from Detstar. If it did, I'd be
living in a cardboard box by now. The Members Section merely helps
to offset some of the costs associated with hosting. And although
it's true that not everybody has access to a credit card, you can
also become a Member with a cash payment.
The people who visit
the website are the reason why Detstar is still here after all these
years... But if the website is going to stay alive, it's the people
who support the website that will make the difference. In the event
that the website has to close to the general public because of excessive
costs, it's the people who chose to become Members that will still
be able to view the site.

First
off, I wanted to tell you I like your site, it's a great reasource
for any Super Smash Bros Melee. fan.
I happened to be reading the "interesting stuff" section
when I recalled that a reflection can be seen on the "Bullet
Bill" trophy, much like the Super Metroid start up screen can
be seen in the reflection of the Metroid trophy. However, I can't
distinguish what the image is on the Bullet Bill. It looked a little
like ROB the NES accessory to me, but I can't tell, and I thought
maybe if you posted this someone might find out.
It's hard to
say if there's aything in there or not... I can imagine all kinds
of things. From a certain point of view, I can see a castle. From
another, I can see a Super Nintendo controller. I'm posting it here
to see if anyone has other ideas...

Dear
Det,
First just let me comment on your
awsome website. It's one of the best (if not the best) gaming sites
I've ever been to. Now then, I believe I've found a great new addition
to your "interesting stuff" section of Super Smash
Bros Melee. You might already know this, but on the Barell
Cannon trophy (note the word CANNON, not the regular barrel) there
is the message "2L84ME" (meaning "too late for me")
printed on the underside. I have no screenshots, but just rotate
the trophy so you can see it. I hope this is new to you, as I have
not seen it on your "interesting stuff" page.
Thanks :)
For years, I've been wondering why people
still kept sending in that "2L84ME" message... I snapped
a screenshot of it in 2002, and fully believed that it was already
in the "Stuff" section. I distinctly remember typing the
heading "Message in a Barrel" for the stuff page. But
perhaps it was a late addition to the page that didn't get saved...
The screenshot was uploaded to the server with the update, but that
same screenshot simply does not appear on any of the "Interesting
Stuff" pages.
The only reason
I had a look, was because you mentioned that you did not find it
on the "Interesting Stuff" page... So I searched through,
and was also unable to find it. It's one of the first things that
fans discovered in Melee, and I'm as surprised as you are that it
wasn't posted on the Melee website. I'll definitely add it.
