Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Time
to Smash...
Another fine round of questions from visitors of the website. It's
OK to be curious, which is why many players like to ask for more
details about things that they've seen on the website, or submit
a random thought off the top of their heads. This month's Mailbag
is heavily into Smash Bros Melee and TimeSplitters Future Perfect,
along with a few other games too. If you'd like to ask a question
or make a comment, go ahead and send an e-mail to DetErest@detstar.com.

Have
any of y'all ever thought about a hosting a Super Smash Bros.
Melee tournament?
I definitely
have considered the idea of hosting a tournament for Super Smash Bros
Melee... I'd make sure to advertise it for about a year, to attract
as many players from North America as possible. But unfortunately,
it's more of a fantasy than a reality.
It would take big bucks to organize a tournament, with costs associated
with renting a large enough facility, and bringing in all the equipment
needed for dozens of players to compete against one another. And of
course, I'd want to do it right - So there would need to be tons of
food with a killer sound system.
My ideal tournament would have an elimination section, where players
would actually compete against one another for the title of Detstar
Melee Champion... But there would also be a recreational area for
players to play against each other after they've been eliminated from
the competition, that way they could still hang around and have a
blast.
Melee would definitely be a game worthy of tournament play, but if
possible, I wouldn't mind also having tournaments for Mario Kart Double
Dash and TimeSplitters Future Perfect on the same day to attract even
more players.
So unless I'm approached by a sponsor with tons of money to actually
make this happen (or find out that I'm a lucky winner of the lottery),
this dream will stay that way - Nothing more than a dream. |
I'll
soon be getting TimeSplitters Future Perfect,
but I can't wait to know what the cheat 8-bit does. Can you
tell me? Thank you |
|
I'm
sure you're really looking forward to finally getting TimeSplitters
Future Perfect, because it's an amazing game. As for the the
"8-bit" cheat, that's a good question. It changes the way
that the graphics look during gameplay, giving everything
a retro feel by reducing the number of colors on the screen.
It's a bit hard to describe, so I've included a screenshot
from normal gameplay, to compare it with the strange feel
of "8-bit mode".

Hi.
I'm wondering how to get into debug mode of Super Smash Bros
Melee could you please tell me how
To gain access to the debug menu, you need to have the Action Replay
cheat device. It's a combination of a special disc and memory card
to use on your GameCube, to enter codes before you begin playing a
game. The debug menu is just one of many codes that are available,
and the Action Replay device can be found in many stores that sell
video games. |
Here's a hypothetical question. If Microsoft
didn't buy Rare and PD Zero came out for GameCube in
2001, would you have added it to your site? Another question here
is do you have any PC games and would you put them on your site if
you had the time.
Actually there was a PD Zero website here on Detstar, in anticipation
of the game being released for the Nintendo GameCube. But following
the announcement of the sale or Rareware to Microsoft, the website
was removed because I don't have an XBox.
As for the PC Games, that's another good question. Up until a few
years ago, I didn't have a computer that was powerful enough to actually
play games that were more advanced than FreeCell. I did play a bit
of Star Wars Episode I Racer... But the game was really choppy on
my shitty old computer... It was so much more fun on my Nintendo 64.
I know there are many good games for the PC... But my main problem
there, is that I spend way too much time in front of a computer during
the day... And when I come home at night, I spend even more time in
front of a computer working on Detstar. So when I finally decide to
"relax" and "enjoy" a game, I want to be as far away from a computer
as possible.

Hello,
I've read some things about Goldeneye 007's beta silo
and you or someone else theorizes that Orumov's briefcase contains
something about the Goldeneye or a missile or whatever. Well, I was
browsing around when I came across this:"Ourumov drops his briefcase,
which contains details of a military demonstration of a high-tech
helicopter" Now I got this off of a webpage that is no longer updated.
Now getting his briefcase would contain info on the copter in the
Frigate and it would tell how to get there which is why the Frigate
is after the silo. Does this make sense? Please reply if you think
so
Ourumov's Briefcase
and Key are both interesting and mysterious at the same time. Although
they serve no real purpose in the final game, someone from Nintendo
or Rareware made a comment about the mystery surrounding Ourumov's
Briefcase. They said something along the line of the contents of the
briefcase being changed at different points during the game's development,
and it was intended to hold plans for the Pirate helicopter at one
time.
But that line you found about the "demonstration of a high-tech helicopter" is new to me. Of course it could be true, but you
can't believe everything you read on the net.
It does seem odd that the Frigate mission (where we first see the Pirate chopper) is immediately after the Silo...
So maybe Rareware was trying to establish a link between the Silo
and the Frigate, via the information about the Pirate helicopter in
Ourumov's Briefcase. But whether the case contained info about the
high-tech demonstration or whether it was simply the plans for the
chopper is something that may never be answered.

Those
debug menu pages urged me to buy a Action Replay Device for the Gamecube
and I put codes in to unlock everything in Super Smash Bros
Melee! Thanks for encouraging me!
You're very welcome, but your thanks should
also go to Melee Master who created that awesome guide to the Debug
Menu. There are tons of fun things to do with game enhancers like
Action Replay and Gameshark. According to a lot of messages that I
receive, Detstar is not only responsible for people buying these devices,
but the actual games as well. There's nothing like free advertising...
If only these companies would give Detstar an honorable mention somewhere...

Hi
I'm a big fan of your site. I see your doing a few things on TimeSplitters
Future Perfect. Something I noticed, the mission in Story
Mode where your on a train...it is very similar to Goldeneye's train
mission. The rooms in the hallways are pretty much basically the same,
the bathrooms are placed in the right place....and the room where
you find the drunk guard is kinda the same but a little different.
I don't have screenshots, so you'll have to look yourself.

Yes,
it's pretty cool that the boys at Free Radical decided to pay another
small tribute to their roots... After all, it was Goldeneye 007
made their talents known to the gaming world. The first mission
in TimeSplitters 2 was a dam in Siberia, so throwing a train mission
in this new 'Splitter game was a nice touch. What will Rareware
do without these brilliant minds that decided to move to Free Radical?
Not a whole lot, lately...
One cool thing about
the Train, is that Free Radical really upped the action by a few
notches. James Bond spent the entire mission gunning through the
inside of the Train cars. But in FuturePerfect, Sgt. Cortez climbs
on top of the cars to battle enemies, and even shoots down a couple
enemy helicopters.

hello,
my question is: What happens if you shoot all the credits in Super
Smash Bros Melee?
I think most Melee fans out there believed
at one time that a special reward could be unlocked by shooting
all the credits... But it's such a daunting task, that I don't think
anyone has ever accomplished it. As far as I know, there isn't anything
that could be unlocked, even if you did succeed - It's just a fun
little ending that the game's creators decided to throw in there.
Of course, there
was that bogus rumor that Toad could be unlocked by doing this...
But the screenshots of him were proven to be fake screenshots done
with cut & paste.

(Regarding the Detstar Members Section)
Joining should be free, it is everywhere else, I understand it costs
to make the site but still, all the other decent sites are free...
Just imagine yourself in a situation having
to pay large sums of money just to keep a hobby like this alive,
despite the fact that many people enjoy your hard work... Would
you be willing to fork over the cash to maintain this hobby? If
you said "yes", I can't honestly believe you... The simple fact
that you hesitate to pay a mere $10 for a membership seems to suggest
that you would not be willing to get stuck with the website's monthly
hosting bill.
Most of Detstar is free - There are hundreds of pages, and thousands
of screenshots in case you haven't noticed... I'm just giving people
a chance to support the website, and score some bonus content in
return... It's a win-win situation.

I'm the grandson of the creator of
Super Smash Bros. Melee. I'd like to prove some things.
Yes, you can win Toad, Sonic, Tails, and Baby Bowser. First, some
lame guy tried to trick everyone that you could win Toad, and he
thought that he was lying. But, NO! And, you can win Sonic, Tails,
and Baby Bowser, but I can't release that to you because then you
would tell people. But, I can give you a couple hints- It's in 4
player mode.
It is very,very,very,very,hard.
You have to get all the other characters, levels, and secret items, to win it.
And, one thing, you have to face them all at once and they are called "Team Sevus"
I have to admit, the first line of your e-mail was enough to get my attention... But by the third line, you somehow managed
to completely and totally discredit yourself. If I wasn't so jaded from hearing so many of these bogus claims, I'd probably
be on the floor laughing my ass off right now. Although I barely cracked a smile, it was hilarious that you made such a
foolish statement in that third line ("Yes, you can win Toad, Sonic, Tails, and Baby Bowser"). I can't believe that you
allowed your story to fall apart in 27 words or less... The only thing that you've proven, is that you're capable of making
up one of the lamest excuses that I've received this year. ("I can't release that to you because then you would tell people
"). Of course I would tell people... Detstar shows players how to unlock secret characters. If a character in Melee isn't
mentioned on the SSBM website, then you cannot unlock them.

Are
Link & Zelda in love?
A very good question... Of course, a simple
question like that can't possibly come with an easy answer. Link's
connection to the Princess of Hyrule has always been shrouded in
mystery. Of course, when a hero comes to the rescue of a damsel
in distress, it's typical for the pair to fall in love. But we haven't
actually seen that happen in the Zelda series, possibly for good
reason...
There's a lot of speculation of how Princess Zelda actually fits
with our green clad hero. In
A Link to the Past, Link's uncle utters these famous words
just before his death: "Zelda is your...."
Of course, Link's uncle dies before he can finish the sentence.
This has led Zelda fans to adopt their own interpretation of what
he was going to say, the most popular of which seem to be:
"Zelda is your... Sister"
"Zelda is your... Destiny"
"Zelda is your... Only Hope".
Although we may never know for sure, the most likely line would
be that Zelda is Link's sister... Of course, things get even more
complicated because the Link and Zelda from most Zelda games are
from completely different time periods, simply reliving the heroics
of their predecessors. So back to the question of whether Link and
Zelda are in love, I'd be inclined to say no... Zelda no doubt loves
Link in a way for his courage and heroics, but they'll probably
never be more than just friends.

Hey
det, This is in response to the letter mailed in about the 2l84me
barrel in Super Smash Bros Melee. I remember seeing
it on your site a long time ago, so you aren’t crazy. I seem to
remember it being right next to or around the Interesting Stuff
part of the site that described the hole in the outhouse on DK’s
stage, and the capsule word. Not sure what happened. It might have
something to do with the fact that on the Interesting Stuff index
page, if you will, there are 6 pages of interesting stuff, but once
you click on one of the first 4, it only goes down to 4 and you
can’t access 5 or 6. If you’re wondering, I’m also that guy who
sent in the fake screenshot of SSBM that caused a whole bunch of
ruckus, the one with the 8 players and like 100 characters? You
know, the good-quality one. Thank you
Ah, ok. Thanks for letting me know that I wasn't out of my mind. (For the record, I probably AM out of my mind, but I was
positive that I had included that message on the barrel at some point). Somehow or other, I must have accidentally deleted it
from the Interesting Stuff page. That was a long time ago, practically around the time that the Melee site began.
That screenshot with dozens of characters for selection sure has generated a lot of feedback... Many people want to know how
to unlock Darth Vader, James Bond, and Spider-man... I suppose looking at the picture is easier than actually reading the
disclaimer below it. Anyway, thanks for dropping me a line.

Hi
Det Erest
i have i question to ask u about Super Smash Bros Melee
how do u get mewtwo i have read what i says to do on your web site
to play Play a total of 20 hours in Melee VS. Mode. Or, play a total
of 700 in Melee VS. Mode. where is Melee VS. Mode i get confused HELP
ME PLEASE
yours in gaming Demy
Right from the main menu, choose "Melee". As far as I know, all of the time
spent in "VS", "Tournament", or "Special" will count towards your total VS
play time. If you're unsure just how much time you've played, go back to the
main menu, then go into "Data", then "Melee Records" and choose "Misc
Records". In here, you will find your VS play time, plus your VS play match
total.
