Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Early
Morning Update...
Seeing how I was awake before the sun this morning, I figured
I might as well drag myself out of bed and finish this week's mailbag.
Besides, what has sleep ever accomplished for anyone? This Mailbag
has a heavy dose of Super Smash Bros Melee, but that's nothing new...
Melee is one of those few games that's addictive enough to keep
playing four countless hours on end...
As always, I've done my best to handle your gaming/website questions...
But if you have other thoughts on your mind, go ahead and send 'em
my way: DetErest@detstar.com

How
do you get an opponent to smash into the screen in Super Smash
Bros Melee?
Whenever someone
has really high damage, and they're hit with the final blow that
sends them flying out of the arena, sometimes they fly into the
background... But other times they splat right on your TV screen.
As far as I can tell, this happens completely randomly. If anyone
out there has a different perspective, feel free to share.

Hello, first I would like to congratulate you on the incontrovertibly
greatest GoldenEye site on the Internet. Now, I read
that you wish for me to make this e-mail as terse as possible so
I will. I've noticed three interesting things in the game that I
have not seen anywhere on your site (and trust me, I read everything).
I feel the only place these would belong would be in your Interesting
Stuff sections. Without further adieu:
1.) The majority of the crates in GoldenEye have "BANKO" written
on them, which is exactly what Pierce Brosnan says to the card dealer
while playing Baccarat in the film.
|
2.)
You have probably noticed that small warning label on the wooden crates.
It's small, white, has a red 2, red 4, etc. What I have never noticed
until now is that a practically identical label appears on the gas
tanks in the Facility in the film! You can see one clear as day next
to Brosnan as he walks out from behind a tank just before Ourumov
begins the 10 count. |
3.)
This one is rather funny. In the Facility bathroom, there is a white
and blue sign next to the door that depicts two hands and a faucet,
obviously displaying a rule that all employees - or soldiers - must
wash their hands after using the restroom... |
This
seems alright, but then we look at the opposing wall. There are only
sinks - no faucets! So how are the soldiers supposed to wash their
hands?
Hopefully you include these in your site as they are things I doubt
many people have noticed. Again, AWESOME job on the site. Good luck
in the future! |
It's
quite an accomplishment to browse through every single page of the
Goldeneye site... And you did indeed find 3 things that weren't mentioned
there.
1)
I'm not sure if these crates say "Banko" or "Bauko"...
Something else about an ammo crate (specifically this one from Multiplayer),
is that the last 3 digits of the serial number are "MK3".
I'm sure it's just a coincidence, because Rareware created the fighting
game Killer Instinct, which was a bit of a rival to Mortal Kombat
3. |
2)
I did find these number tags, scattered in various places... It's
in the Members Section, but I don't believe it appears anywhere on
the main site. These little things reminded me of playing cards, but
I'll have to check and see if I can spot that sign in the Goldeneye
movie.
3) As for the faucets, I had never even really noticed that they were
missing before... Imagine, a chemical weapons facility that posts
instructions that are impossible for employees to follow... The government
must have been involved in this one. |

It
was cool to see two episodes of Dexter Comics
at the same time, is there going to be two episodes posted
every week now?
Occasionally,
two episodes may be posted on the same day for various reasons.
Last week, it was to fit in the special fireworks episode...
As for this week, the two episodes go hand in hand with one
another in the story.

Hullo,
first all, I`d like to say, I love your website. It`s seriously
the best Super Smash Bros Melee website I`ve ever
been on. What I wanted to know was, the Marth secret, not the one
with Marth`s head on the blade, but the other one, entitled 'Evil
Emblem'. I could`nt find where the light blue part was that had
the swirly designs. I think that that secret is cool. Can you tell
me specifically where to go for that? ^^;
-Frequent SSMB player
Ah yes, those weird little faces... It's a cool little detail. I'm not sure if it's something that the developers did my accident or not, but seeing how there are two evil faces, it seems as if it was done on purpose.
I found that on one of Marth's trophies, although I'm not completely sure which one. Check for whatever trophy it is where Marth is wearing that blue cape, and I'm pretty sure the design is on the back of the cape.

In
Mario Kart Double Dash, have you ever noticed in bower's
castle that the arrows guiding your way have mean looks on their faces?
I thought I was imagining things but they definitely do. The other
tracks the arrows have somewhat happy faces
Actually, I'd never noticed that before...
On a course like Bowser's castle, I'm whipping around dangerous corners
and avoiding hazards, so I'd never even glanced at any of the signs...
It's just like city driving. |
I
heard that the cheese in Perfect Dark was supposed to
be the key to a really awesome cheat. No one knows what though. I
haven't even seen any good theories. Actually I can't think of a cheat
either. Something new...oh well. If it was an amazing cheat then maybe
it's still hidden in the memory...
For a while, there were rumors on the Internet
that the mysterious pieces of cheese in Perfect Dark led to a secret
hidden extra... But seeing how absolutely nothing has been discovered
(combined with the fact that Rareware stated that someone on the team
just did it for fun), it seems as if those chunks of swiss cheese
were just thrown in for detail.... Even though each mission has a
piece of cheese hidden somewhere. It must have been kinda fun to figure
out just where to hide one in each level. |

Where
can I check how many melee vs. matches I have finished in Super
Smash Bros Melee? I want to know how close I am to unlocking
some of the secret characters.
If you're unsure just how much played,
go back to the main menu, then go into "Data", then "Melee Records"
and choose "Misc Records". In here, you will find your VS play time,
plus your VS play match total.

Episode
73 of the Comics is hilarious! I like Dexter's crowbar.
Dexter's blue
crowbar has gotten him into many places... It's also gotten him into
a lot of trouble. There are always two ways to get something done;
There's the legal way, and there's Dexter's way. Dexter's approach
just happens to be the quickest and easiest of the two.

In
Super Smash Bros Melee if you wait for a pretty long
time in great bay, you will see, in the background, the moon coming
down to the screen. Then, out of nowhere, the giants will be holding
the moon, saving it from falling. Then when they are done they will
climb the mountain on the left side. You can't pause the game to
see this so you will have you zoom out in order to see it.
It's a background detail that many players
have noticed, but somehow or other, it's never actually made it
onto the SSBM website. It does take a while for the moon to fall,
so it wouldn't happen in a short match. I believe it takes about
four minutes before it occurs.

Your
Goldeneye site is truly amazing. After all
these years a lot of info was gathered there and it is by
far the most complete best looking goldeneye site on the net!
Keep up the good work.
Thanks. It's good to hear that players
of Goldeneye 007 enjoy browsing through the pages of information
that I've gathered. Goldeneye was my favorite game at the
turn of the millennium, and there wasn't a website on the
net that came close to covering all the amazing aspects of
this game...
And with all the mysteries surrounding the game, it was interesting
to dig deeper and find all kinds of stuff hidden deep beneath
the game's surface... So I began writing some pages of my
own, doing more and more until it became a huge resource that's
used daily by Goldeneye fans.

Hello,
I'm just a Super Smash Bros Melee fan and I found out
that Peach can pull out a Bob-omb! I can prove it!! In this e-mail,
it have a screenshot that Peach holding a bob-omb in the open green
field from all-star mode.
It's a very
rare moment whenever Peach pulls up something other than a vegetable...
I've only seen the Bob-omb myself, but other players have reported
seeing her randomly pull items like Beam Swords and Mr. Saturns, and
even one incident with a Homerun Bat.
Something that I find really strange here is how 'new' this... I owned
Melee for a couple years before I even knew about this trick, but
in recent months I've received dozens of e-mails about this... |
Dude, you never say your age! I mean,
just give us an idea. Are you still in school? I'm thinkin with all
this programming and stuff you'd have to be a genius or something.
It's no accident
that I've kept my personal information private... Although it's only
natural to be curious, I don't really see why my age should make such
a difference. If you enjoy reading the content that gets posted on
the gamesites, would it really matter if it was published by someone
who was 16 versus someone who was 96? Although that's a bit of an
extreme example, hopefully you get the idea.
An obsessive reader of the site might be able narrow down my age,
but that's up to them. For the record, I'm certainly not old... But
I'm not getting any younger either.
Also for the record, I would definitely not consider myself to be
a genius.
If I truly was a genius, I'd be rich and comfy by now. |
I've done a little research, and I've
found a third way to unlock Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros Melee, though
it's a little complicated. With two controllers plugged into the GCN,
here are the steps to do this:
1. go into VS Mode.
2. Select Custom Rules and change the game mode to stock using three
lives.
3. Select 'Item Switch' and turn the item appearances on NONE.
4. Exit Custom Rules and select Melee.
5. Have the 1st player be Mario.
6. Have the second player be Luigi.
7. Press Start and enter the stage selection screen.
8. Select the 'Pokemon Stadium' stage.
*Okay, if you've done it right so far, Mario and Luigi should have
three lives, and there should be absolutely no items, including crates,
barrels, or capsules that appear. You cannot have the 2nd player as
a CPU, but as a HMN player instead. You should be in the 'Pokemon
Stadium' stage with the big Pokeball in the middle. Now let's go to
step nine.
9. Have Mario stand on the left side of the Pokeball in the middle
of the stage, and have Luigi stand on the right side of it.
10. Your work is done for today. Turn off your TV, NOT your game,
and wait until tomorrow morning.
11. In the morning, turn on the TV to find your game is right where
it was when you left it.
12. Using Mario, KO Luigi.
13. After the announcer says "GAME!" and you finish looking at your
scores, Mewtwo will challenge you as Mario. Beat him and that psychic
weirdo will be all yours to control.
Congratulations! You've unlocked Mewtwo! I might not have checked
this myself in a while, but it worked the seven times I tried it!
Try it for yourself and it should work!
There
are two ways to unlock Mewtwo - Play 700 VS matches, or play for 20
hours... This trick isn't really a third method, but just a twist
on the 20 hour requirement.. Although you'll probably unlock Mewtwo
by following those steps, it does nothing more than build up the number
of hours that it would normally take to get Mewtwo to appear and challenge
you. As for the characters used and stage played in, it really makes
no difference because the game keeps track of the number of hours
played. |
