Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Christmas
Lights in the Middle of August...
Another month, and another Mailbag full of colorful questions.
Some people are surprised that I still receive daily mail about
Goldeneye 007, which is sometimes an even more common subject in
my mailbox than F-Zero GX...
While so many people send really good messages, there was a rather
pathetic individual who felt compelled to send dozens of lovely
messages like "Update or die". I'm sure he meant it in
a good way... But because I take no chances, he'll be hunted down
and killed as a precaution.
I always try to post a good mix of games in the Mailbag, just as
I always try to offer the best possible answer. Send your questions
and comments about the website, the games, or the Comics to: DetErest@detstar.com

Yo!
I was just running through your [Super Smash Bros Melee]
stuff on Captain Falcon, and I noticed that you were talking about
his clone, racer #25 Blood Falcon. I am not too sure if you have this
screenshot or not, but I managed to get it off a friend of mine. It's
the same Blood Falcon, but if you read his back carefully, you might
find something interesting that is only found in the Japanese release
of the game.
Hey, that's really cool. I hadn't seen the
screenshot before, but I think I remember hearing something about
Blood Falcon's machine being called the "Hell Hawk" at some
point. It's a much cooler name... Too cool for North America, I guess.
Thanks for sending.
Many cool things can be found while browsing the website for Nintendo
of Japan - But navigating the menu is a bit of an adventure in trial
& error... |

I just recently ordered an Action
Replay device. But ARE there different Action Replays for the GameCube?
As
far as I know, it doesn't matter which version of Action
Replay that you have...
But in some cases (Super Smash Bros Melee for example), there are
different versions of the game... So even though your Action Replay
device will work with all three versions, you'll need to use the
codes that correspond to your version.
To figure out which version of Melee you have, you'll need to look
at your game disc. On this page, there are instructions for how
to determine your version:

Hey
Det, great stuff on Mario Kart Double Dash!!
I just want to let you know that whenever Lightning strikes on Mario
circuit, the annoying goombas will turn into mushrooms. |
Ah
yes, one of those little facts that somehow managed to get left out
of the website...
That area of the Mario Circuit course is certainly a hazard, so whenever
those pests turn into powerups, it's a much friendlier tour through
the scenic green hills. |
In
comic 78 (of Dexter Comics) why is there a floating
pacman in panel 4?
I had some fun
during the creation of Episode
78. While I was working on the garbage can, I had the idea to
include a chomping creature on the wall as an odd little background
detail. Although it's tough to notice (because it was deliberately
faded to blend in), the hungry little dude is actually chasing a small
band of ghosts... |
When
you use a Gameshark
to play the Cradle level in multiplayer on Goldeneye 007,
is it possible that you can go to the very bottom and fall off ( the
place where Bond kills Alec in story mode ) ?
That's a very good question... Alec
Trevelyan falls to his death in the Goldeneye story mode...
But in Multiplayer, you'll fall into a state
of limbo. Before managing to get down to the pit of death however,
you'll discover that the door is locked. I didn't want to bother finding
a code to unlock the door for this test, I used the "Walk Through
Doors" code. |
When
our test victim (player 2) reaches the bottom platform, we can barely
see him from above. He's so far down, that a spark can just barely
be seen when he fires his gun. After a leap of faith off of the platform,
he simply vanishes into thin air from player 1's screen. |
After
watching the Cradle structure get smaller and smaller as he falls,
player 2 eventually reaches some sort of "bottom". There's
no ground to stand on, but you can look up and barely see the platform.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to escape from here.
You can fire shots upward in a pathetic attempt to hit your enemy...
Although I wasn't able to score a kill, you can see some flakes falling
down as my bullets hit the overhanging walkway. |
Dr.
Mario was not JUST on NES in a game before SSBM. In
2000, 1 year before Melee, Dr. Mario was rehashed for N64 in, you
guessed it, Dr. Mario 64. This game was released because the N64 was
dying fast and nintendo decided to re-release an bunch of classics
for it before retiring the system. This is probably the reason he
showed up in Melee. |
Ah,
right you are. N64 games were phased out quite quickly with the approach
of the Nintendo GameCube, which caused me not to even notice that
this game had been released. Seeing how this brief appearance by Dr.
Mario happened just several months before SSBM was released, it explains
why Nintendo added this minor character to Melee. Thanks for sending. |

I
don't usually bother with e-mailing people about their websites,
mainly because they are never usually that good, but my god Detstar
is amazing, the most useful information for each game on the site,
especially Goldeneye 007, everything's just so interesting
to read, all the little bits of info about the tiniest detail for
every level in each whole game. Amazing, truly amazing, you can
just keep coming back to the site and read the same thing but never
get bored. Definitely in the top 3 gaming sites on the web!!! Thanx
Goldeneye was the game that started it
all... That site was specifically created for people who had already
finished the game, but were interested to learn more... Which makes
the Goldeneye site special, in the sense that the other gamesites
focussed more on strategy, and how to finish or complete a game.

Hey
dude, I have some questions. I
own Super Smash Bros Melee, Zelda
Wind Waker and F-Zero GX, so ur
site is really cool for me man! Nice stuff.
If you like all three of those
games, then you really lucked out when you happened to
stumble upon Detstar... |
1.
What is ur max speed in F-Zero GX? I reached
mach 3 with hyper speeder once!
In F-Zero GX, the highest speed
I was able to reach was 3,030km/h... The Hyper Speeder
is my favorite machine, but I hit my personal record speed
with the Little Wyvern. |
2.
In Super Smash Bros Melee, how many hours
have you played (power time)? I played 350 hours man!
I only left SSBM one time while I had dinner, the rest
is played time!
The
Power Time on my Memory Card for Super Smash Bros Melee
is probably somewhere between 30-40 hours... But I'm one
of those unfortunate suckers who has a job, bills, and
all that other crap. I frequently skip lunch though -
Not to play Melee, but because gas is so expensive... |
|
3.
Wheres all the cool Zelda Wind Waker stuff?
Are you gonna put it back?
Unfortunately, a large portion of the Zelda website
became unavailable when the hosting company shut down
the Zelda database due to excessive usage by visitors
of the website... Although I still have all the contents
of the pages, there's no easy (or affordable) way to
get it back online again...
Extracting everything and rebuilding the contents into
static pages is an option, but it's a mind-numbing process,
especially having to re-link all of the links to other
pages within those pages.

I was reading your site and the piece on Mario Kart for the Gamecube...
It's very cool but you missed one thing.. In the Character Origins
page you said that Toadette's first appearance was in Double Dash...
But hardcore gamers will recognize her from the N64 game Paper Mario
and the sequel on the Gamecube
Ah yes. It turns out that Toadette appeared
in a few Mario games before Double Dash was released... MKDD was
the first time that I personally remembered seeing her. So many
games, so little time.

About
the Comics, how old is Dexter?
On the surface, Dexter appears to be a
teenage male about 17 years of age... But he has no memory of his
past, and has been alive for longer than he realizes... So he's
actually a few years older, possibly making him anywhere between
19 and 22.

Hi
Det,
I was looking through your Goldeneye 007 site the other
day and found something curious. On the siloelevator.mpg clip, after
the lift has risen, the movie cuts to someone playing the game. Is
it you..?
Please, if you have time, answer, as I think this could be one of
the biggest Goldeneye mysteries solved... Just what is DetErest's
appearance?
|
Many
people seem to think that yours truly can be seen that video... But
I'm such a paranoid and private person that I'd never let myself appear
in a video download. For the record, I believe the guy from the video
is watching a video of Goldeneye 007, but not actually playing it...
But regardless, the dude from the video was just one of a handful
of lucky gamers who got to take the Nintendo 64 for a test-drive (and
see some sweet previews) before the system was released about a decade
ago. What a bunch of spoiled little brats... (I wish I could have
been one of those little brats.) |
My god man the last time you put some thing
on youre site was july 14th man and its august 1st my god
I know that it's your
summer vacation time, and you're looking forward to seeing more content
posted on the website.... But many people fail to realize that Detstar
isn't a job - It's a hobby that consumes both my time and money.
The term "summer"
has little meaning as you get older, have to drag your ass to work on
a beautiful day. All of this "job" nonsense really cuts into
my funtime... I spend all day in front of a computer. So when I get home,
it's hard to force myself to sit down and spend even more time plugging
away at a machine. I'd like to think that I can take an occasional vacation
from Detstar, to come back recharged, refreshed, and ready to roll. You
don't want the webmaster to go on a shooting rampage, do you?
Complaining about a brief
lull in updates is incredibly foolish and selfish... It's easy to just
sit back and criticize. Yet, I don't have many of you people stepping
up to help write quality content for the site or anything. Unfortunately,
the types of people who send messages like this probably never actually
read the Mailbag...
Does
Fox McCloud have a girlfriend?
In StarFox Adventures, Fox McCloud meets
up with a female fox named Krystal...
It definitely seems as if the furry friends become interested each
other, but I think Nintendo just left it open to our imaginations.
Some people might imagine X-rated material, however... |
I
was reading though the episodes [of Dexter Comics] and
I have to ask something. Why is it that in episode 4 Marley says that
he doesn't use computers but in episode 15 he's in a computer class?
In Hellford High school, the students are
forced to take at least one computer course... So Marley gets stuck
in computer class, even though he's paranoid about using those machines.
Even though everyone needs a computer credit before they graduate,
Marley won't be graduating anytime soon... Next year, he'll be repeating
the same computer class for the third time in a row. |
