Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Deep
in Thought...
New things about the featured games here on Detstar keep
being unearthed every day by visitors... Even after hundreds of
pages, there are still things that go unmentioned or undiscovered
until someone sends me an e-mail... Below are some of the latest
additions, as well as a few that I found when I was cleaning out
my mailbox. Believe it or not, I even found Bob Dole buried under
a few years worth of mail, so I left him there.

Hello
DetErest,
Great site! Anyway, in the "Human Trapped in a Wall"
part of your Perfect Dark Interesting Stuff
area, I noticed that the picture on the wall looked a lot
like the cover of the book Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It
could also be the "thinking man" in that shot.
|
The
wall design from the dataDyne building seems to resemble both
of those artworks... Although the man looks a bit like Atlas,
it seems to be a better match for the bronze statue of "The
Thinker" by French artist Auguste Rodin... Great observation. |

Hello,
I was curious if you could put on the web-site, or even better send
me a Super Smash Bros Melee picture of Zelda using
Din's Fire. A nice good quality picture. The only one I found on
your web-site, didn't look like she was actually performing one.
So if you could help me get a picture of that, I'd really appreciate
it.
It seems like every picture they show of Zelda attacking with Din's
Fire, the ball has exploded, therefore it doesn't really help me
any. I'm working on a project, and the picture would really be helpful,
thanks!
Sure,
no problem.
I just happen to be in a good mood. On a different day, I might
have torched your house...
Plus, it's something that's fairly simple to get a snapshot of.
I'm sending three different poses of Zelda using Din's Fire. Let
me know which one you like best.

Congratulations
on the great site!
I'll keep it short, would it be possible for you to translate the
rough 'Citadel' level into some kind of blueprint map? If so, could
you please post it on the site so avid Goldeneye fans
can get a better feel for what the level might have been and, also,
so that it could be modeled for some of the current PC games, etc..
If not, then many thanks for exploring both Goldeneye and Perfect
Dark over the years in such depth and detail. Without your site, many
people wouldn't have gotten the answers they needed - we all know
how unresponsive and slipppery Rareware can be toward questions.
I wish you and the site all the best for the future.
Several years
ago, I probably would have definitely created a detailed map to
illustrate every square foot of this mysterious arena...
It's definitely an interesting layout, with four big rooms (each
with pillars and obstacles, with four ramps leading up to a highpoint.
It's surprisingly simple, which explains why Rareware described
it as a rough test level. But it's the simplicity that would make
it fun... No huge arena to run and hide in, which forces players
into confined spaces where they can exchange gunfire, and duck behind
pillars.
As for a map, it would take a bit of time to put together... And
my spare time is limited now, compared to what it used to be. If
anyone out there wants to design a good quality map and send it
in, feel free to do so.

Hey,
I've been visiting your site for many years now, even back to the
early days. I've been reading the book Perfect Dark: Initial
Vector and wanted you to know how awesome of a book it is.
It's a great backdrop to Perfect Dark and looks like it will be
a great follow-up story to Perfect Dark: Zero.
What really shocked me about the book so much to make me want to
e-mail you is finding the history of the "Jonathan" character
from the N64 game in this book. In the book his name is Jonathan
Steinberg. At first I thought it was some different Jonathan because
I remember something to the lines of the guy in the N64 game being
named "Jonathan Dark." But then a little more than halfway
through the book he said that he thought Joanna Dark would have
a more accurate shot if she used a DY37 Magnum. This was a dead
give away that he was the Jonathan from those A51 levels in the
original Perfect Dark who loved to use that revolver so much.
I find Perfect Dark: Initial Vector to be a very engrossing and
interesting novel and it really puts the Perfect Dark world in perspective.
I highly recommend that you give it a read.
I must say that I never knew that such
a book was in existence, but it certainly does sound interesting...
Because of lack of successful game-turned-movies, a written Perfect
Dark story seems much more appealing.
Where did you happen to discover this title?

I'm
a big fan of Super Smash Bros Melee, and your website is just
a piece of Gods works... It's great.
In your Strategies i have noticed that you don't have all the players,
is it because you only are showing strategies to the players you have
practice your self with? It would be gladly helpful if you could update
some Samus and Falco
Strategies. But then you have to practice first and so on...
Aside from the
time it takes to create a strategy page, it's also about staying in
practice with a character... At one time, I was quite lethal when
using Falco, and loved using his speed and his really effective combos.
Samus was also a character that I was quite comfortable with, because
she's quite similar to Link, who is my primary character of choice. |

Hey
Det, I was wondering how you get such good screenshots.
The slave monkeys at Detstar work
extremely hard to ensure that great screenshots are taken
for the viewing pleasure of the visitors... Any monkey who
uses a screenshot of lesser-quality is punished by instant
execution.

Hi,
I was wondering about J-Zap's profile in Dexter Comics.
Will ever put J-Zap's picture up and replace Ned's picture since he
isn't in the comics very much?
There were a
few episodes that included Ned in the original workings of Round 4,
but those scenes ended up being cut before the story was finalized.
Even though the teen terror has been absent this season, Ned will
return...
As for your question about J-Zap, I know this isn't the answer you
were hoping for, but... You'll have to wait and see. |

Dear
Det,
I swear, in the vague haze that is my memory, that I have gotten
to the secret island in Goldeneye 007 without
a gameshark. And while I can't say I have proof with a video,
I can assure you that I have never owned, seen, or come in contact
with an N64 gameshark. Here is the explanation of how I did
to the bet of my abilities to remember.
On the dam level, on the side where the secret island is, there
is a set of three docks. Each dock has a ladder descending from
it from the top of the damn. On the farthest one (from the beginning
of the level), if I remember correctly, there's either no barrels
and boxes in the way of the ladder and the corner of the dock,
or a limited number of exploding boxes. In either case, make
sure the area is cleared. There should be a short distance between
where the edge of the dock is, and the ladder itself. There's
an invisible wall the guards you from falling in the water,
but there's some sort of glitch in this corner. You have climb
the ladder and as soon as it lets you, slide off the ladder
at the highest point. Aim for that corner closest to you. Keep
trying till you get through.
I swear I've done this. I remember the pain of frustration trying
it over and over again. I remember people asking me what the
hell I was doing. I distinctly remember the elation of actually
landing in the water.
Please, either back up my claims, or call me an all out crazy.
I need closure on this. I swear it really happened.
In the past, I had considered that it might be possible to get
to the secret Island without a Gameshark/Action Replay device...
So I tried numerous things to glitch up the game in an effort
to make it to the distant island.
One thing I did was crouch while using the Tiny Bond cheat,
and then moving down the stairs on the Dam, which of course
causes a glitch that allow Bond to float temporarily... But
I was never actually successful in getting Bond to leave the
docks en route to the island.
So, I don't think it can be done. However, I'll anonymously
post your letter and see if anyone has done it for themselves...
And if so, they should be able to provide a method. |
When
I see the simulants fire the DY357 Magnum in Perfect Dark,
they fire it with a much higher fire-rate than I can. Is there
a trick how to fire quicker with it, and I just didn't find
it out? I just want to know that it's my fault and not the game's
one, that the DY357 Magnums I carry are so slow.
In many games, CPU controlled characters can often
do things that that we can't. (such as jumping and rolling).
And now that you mention it, I've noticed some oddities whenever
a Simulant fires the Magnum, but never really put much through
into it... But I'm fairly certain that a computer characters
occasionally fire a "double shot", with a second bullet
firing almost immediately after the first one. |
Just
one question about Candi (from Dexter Comics).
She used to be a cheerleader, and still is (was?) in her profile...
But now she's dressed in a soccer uniform and playing soccer.
Is she still a cheerleader or not?
Candi was an avid cheerleader, but most of the school
sports have been cut out of the budget... And a lack of team
sports at Hellford High means a limited number of occasions
for her to don her cheer uniform. The girl's soccer team is
the only real sport left (because badminton doesn't count),
and Candi is enjoying competition instead of exhibition... Although,
she is pretty easy on the eyes. |
Yo
det, I have something I want to ask you about Goldeneye 007.
With the Gameshark codes to play the CITADEL, do you think anyone
will ever find the CASINO?
YOU GUYS ARE GODS
Ah yes... The famous Casino scene from the
Goldeneye movie, which in the game's storyline, seems to have been
"replaced" by the rather irrelevant Silo mission. The Casino
is where Bond meets Xenia, even though this scene is missing from
the list of missions... And now that the long lost Citadel arena has
finally been unearthed, many players are hoping for another huge discovery...
It was known for a long time that there were references to the "Citadel"
or "Cathedral" deep inside the game's memory... But as far
as I'm aware, there isn't any solid evidence to suggest that a Casino
mission ever existed. There are a few hints that there may have been
plans to incorporate this scene from the Goldeneye movie into the
game... But even if this was Rareware's original intention, I don't
believe that this location was ever developed in the actual game.
A few mysterious "beta" items may have been associated with
it, but nothing more has been found. |
Where
did u get the Super Smash Bros Melee AIM icons?
Before you download
something from the Internet, someone has to create it first... SSBM
AIM icons didn't exist as far as I knew, so I made icons featuring
Melee characters just for the fun of it. |
Holy crap man!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a dream I met
you in person! I some how found your secret lair! In my dream your lair
was the hollowed out inside of a small mountain. Also you looked like the
screaming intern from a show called X-Play on the video game channel G4.
It was pretty messed up man! What does this mean?! Wait you're not going
to kill me for saying any of this if it's true are you?
Messed up? Absolutely.
True? Hardly.
The mysterious figure in your dream certainly doesn't have any connection
with me. I don't enjoy the hazards associated with a living inside mountain
cavern anyway... I'm also a bit paranoid about the thought of being on television
because I despise cameras...
