Mailbag
Welcome to the Mailbag, where your questions
get answered... Or at least some of them, anyway. If you've got something
that hasn't been posted before, than this is where it can happen. Unanswered
questions is the main focus, but I receive practically everything, from
facts and findings, to codes and creations.

Showers Bring May Power...
Messages were pouring into my mailbox over the past month...
I went back to pick the best ones, and arranged them into a bouquet
of lovely e-mails to answer... Only a few people elected to send
impatient e-mails about a delay in updates, while others chose to
send questions and cool observations... I always prefer the latter.
If you've got something to share, you know where to send it:

Hello!
I am a fan of all your websites and I just wanted to contribute something
that I thought was cool to your Zelda Windwaker section.
In Zelda: Ocarina of Time, do you remember when the Deku Tree
died and after beating the Forest Temple, a new tree was planted? Well,
that tree looks almost exactly like the Deku Tree of the Windwaker game!
It's like a little part of Kokiri Forest was still lingering! Unfortunately,
I can't find any pictures to prove to you. I just remember! If you are willing
to look into this, then go for it!
That sounds like a
cool little detail for the developers to incorporate into the game... I'd
have to start a new gamefile to see this, but maybe someone reading this
will be kind enough to supply an Ocarina of Time snapshot for comparison
purposes...
I
HAVE SUCCESSFULLY UNLOCKED CONKER IN SUPER SMASH BROS. MELEE!!!!.
I did it by beating all star mode with Pichu on very hard and in less
than 2 minutes without using any recovery items. these are some pics
that i took. i will send you more later on. |
Ah,
yes... A new rumored character for SSBM... The character select screen
looks quite convincing, and the "Challenger Approaching"
screen is pretty good...
However, screenshots like this aren't overly difficult to fake. You
wouldn't happen to have any action screenshots of Conker in a match,
do you? Of course not.
To even attempt to conquer All-Star mode in less than 2 minutes, you'd
probably have to be high on crack. |
Do
you think that there will be a TimeSplitters 4? I really
like the TimeSplitters series and I hope that there will be a TimeSplitters
4 for the Next Generation of consoles. Also do you think that Nintendo
might wise up and buy Free Radical Design so that way the Nintendo
consoles have a good First-Person Shooter franchise?
I believe that
Free Radical Design has plans for another game in the TimeSplitters
series, although there's no information available on the company's
website. They've did amazing things with TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters
Future Perfect. The company website is about a year out of date, because
with their relatively small staff, game development takes priority
over the website updates.
(I did send an inquiry to see if Free Radical was looking for
a webmaster, but I haven't heard back yet...)
As for Free Radical establishing an exclusive partnership with Nintendo,
I can't see that happening. By releasing their games for GameCube,
PS2 and X-Box, Free Radical has a much bigger audience of people to
buy their games. |

Please
tell me if it is true that you can unlock Raikou
on Super Smash Brothers Melee
by beating Event match 51 with Pichu!!! I cant do it myself, respond
Please!!!!
Lately, I've been receiving many questions
about unlocking Raikou... Completing the rather insane Event Match
51 with Pichu would be a very difficult task. However, Raikou is
not a playable character no matter what difficult feats you manage
to accomplish.

Dear
Det,
I just noticed a Perfect Dark/Goldeneye
joke in your Multiplayer section. You get the Dinner Jackets
after completing 7 challenges. 7 challenges for James Bond
007's tuxes. I thought that joke was just prefect. Your annoyance,
Cat Lover
P.S. "Prefect" was a joke. They should have included the original
heads, too. Plus the Mission Mode head. :P
I never noticed that one before...
The Dinner Jackets were one of the cool little things that
I was looking forward to unlocking in Perfect Dark, as I bought
the game a few days after it was released. I had heard the
good news, and couldn't wait to unlock the suits and the Facility
arena.

Hi
Det, congrats on the site, its totally rocks!
From what I read on your site, you play (or have played) your
N64 a LOT.
Haven't the joysticks on your controllers got a bit loose?
Mine certainly have, and I've only had mine for 3 years. And
also, is it possible for GameCube joysticks to get loose?
Just wondering.
Thanks for your time.
|
After a certain amount of usage, N64 joysticks do start to get
a bit wobbly. It's just something that tends to happen, especially
if you've been playing games like the original Mario Party.
The technology seems to have improved though, because I haven't
had this problem with my GameCube controllers yet. However,
the soft rubber padding is starting to peel on one of my GC
controllers.
I only buy Nintendo brand controllers, because everything else
is crap. Sure, it might be cheaper for the short term... But
Nintendo accessories keep on kicking long after third party
products have kicked the bucket.
Everything else I've ever seen has broken, including my SharkPad
by InterAct. It has a cool design, and it's a good controller...
But on a SharkPad, the Z-trigger button will eventually break.
The Nintendo brand N64 controllers do get a loose feel after
a while, but I've never seen a Nintendo controller cease to
function. |

Millions
of people already know about Super Smash Bros Melee's
awesome debug code... But there's gotta be one for the original
SSB somewhere, I know it! Do you know what it is or where
I can find it? Please, I (as well as other people, perhaps)
am (are) desperate!!!
Many
games seem to have this special mode lingering around inside
the memory. The Debug Menu is used by the developers when
they're in the testing stages, and they often simply leave
it in because nobody can access it under normal circumstances...
But hackers often seem to come through, discovering the debug
mode in games like SSBM and Goldeneye 007. There's
even a push button code for the debug menu in the N64 game
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.
But as for Super
Smash Bros 64, I don't believe such a code has ever been
found. |
My mom won't let me sign up to be a Detstar
Member if you have to pay, so get rid of the charge
Nobody likes
to pay.... But for some strange reason, my hosting company keeps sending
me these darned bills every month... I know everyone likes to get
stuff for free, but the hosting needs to be paid for if the site is
going to remain open to the public. The bonus material in the Members
Section is offered as a reward for people who help support the website.
It's completely understandable that some parents might be skeptical
about paying for a Membership. To offer some peace of mind, Detstar
has been around for several years, and has established a reputation
as a solid gamesite that delivers high quality content. A Detstar
Membership also makes a great Birthday present or Christmas gift. |
Hey
Det
My question is about Super Smash Bros. Melee:
Even though I passed the whole game and have all the trophies,
I don't have all the credits at the end of the adventure or
classic mode. Do you? Great job on the website by the way.
Managing
to hit all of those flyby credits is certainly easier said than
done. Naturally, some people claimed to have pulled it off,
some saying that they earned nothing, while others made up elaborate
stories.
If
every single target was hit, I would imagine that the final
score would be 200 or more... However, I
personally have no plans to try and hit all of those credits
because there's no real reason to believe that anything could
be unlocked by doing so. |
Dude, it's been a month, now. I now you
must be a very busy man (or woman o_O), but at least try to update
once every two weeks.
Because Detstar is a side project in my life, an occasional break
is necessary to maintain sanity. You don't want your webmaster to
climb a bell tower and begin sniping innocent victims before turning
the gun on himself, do you?
Although it's been a while since updates were made to the actual
website, rest assured that
I've been working on new content in the meantime. As you sit at your
computer and eagerly await the next update, just picture me plugging
away at my computer for hours, turning ideas, e-mails, and submissions
into pages for the website.

Love
the game, glad you do to. Your (Perfect Dark)
site has been an inspiration to get my 12.5 hours of play
in to be Perfect. Thanks
No problem... I always like to go
for completeness, even though there was nothing overly special
rewarded by becoming a "Perfect" player in Perfect
Dark's Combat Simulator.
In the case of PD, you simply have to pull of some incredible
feats that would probably take years under normal playing
conditions... That's why I posted all of those neat little
tricks to improve your stats, and speed up the process of
becoming "Perfect".
The final stat I needed to achieve, was the required 9000km
of walking distance... As you can see from this screenshot,
I just happened to hit that mark when I took a break to check
my stats.

Hey
Det,
Did you know that Sean Connery is now allowing his image to
be used for "From Russia With Love"
by EA Games?
It really is a great to see Connery's white Tuxedo in a Bond
game...finally. |
|
Electonic
Arts really went for authenticity when they decided to turn
this classic Bond film into a videogame, by grabbing Sean
Connery to make use of his voice and his likeness (as he appeared
in the 1960s...). If the rumors are true, he was paid more
for this game than he did for the actual film...
Another note about Bond's white tuxedo, is the fact that Bond's
famous white tux from Goldfinger will be seen worn by Agent
Marley on May 22, 2006.

Dear Detstar,
This is not regarding any of the games on your site, but rather your
forums. I think you should make your own invisionfree or freeweb.com
forum website. So it would be the shiz-nit if you would make a separate
free forum website, so we know that we're actually talking about things
on your site.
Opening up a
new free-hosted forum would probably seem all cheap and crappy, especially
compared to the elaborate forums that were hosted here at one time.
The ever popular
Detstar Forums had to be closed due to the heavy traffic strain on
the server... Managing the Forums is like a full-time job, requiring
constant Administration because of issues with forum members.... It's
definitely something that I can't see myself doing anymore.
I might however be open to the idea of promoting an existing games
forum as an "unofficial Detstar messageboard"... Of course,
it would need to be up and running, and effectively managed by some
real Nintendo fans...
I
like Roy (in Super Smash Bros Melee), but I only find
much use for him in the One-Player Mode because the CPU's are so stupid
and they walk right into your attack, but I can't really use him in
Vs. Mode because his attacks are so slow. Could you give me some strategies
for him since you're good with Roy?
I've often posed the question whether Link
or Roy is my overall character of choice... I'd probably pick Link,
because he's a much more balanced character than Roy. Having said
that, Roy can be quite devastating...
Roy's forward smash move deals lots of damage, and it has good range.
So, I try to use this attack quite often during a fight. Also, his
special B+forward combo move can be quite deadly, especially if you
mix it up with highs and lows to keep your opponent guessing. Once
you've sliced and diced your opponent, dash in with a quick forward
+ A attack to stun your victim, which can often set you up for another
good strong attack. (Roy's down+A attack is one of his quickest moves,
and it can get you out of many tight situations)
As a final note, Roy's midair Z attack doesn't cause much damage,
but it can be useful for striking your opponents in order to put them
in a vulnerable position for a stronger slash. |
A
new comic should be posted every 7 days.
Not to worry...
Starting this week, there will be 2 brand new comic episodes appearing
every week to lead you into the summer. |
That
thing you said about Oprah
and the boxart for the game you made? That cracked me up! You're also
right about that woman. You should go to her house and let Marley's
dog wreck the place
I wasn't the
one who said those horrible, hurtful things about Oprah... Dexter
did it.
Every one of his words is true, however... Oprah's one hell of a bitch
:) |
