Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually, I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've posted a few of them below.

Whoa, what's with the sudden surge of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark e-mails? I guess the last update for PD has really sparked the attention of the game's fans, while the Goldeneye world was revived a bit with the discovery of the long lost Citadel level.

How big was the Citadel discovery? A mention of it was actually published in Cube magazine. This might not seem unusual to Goldeneye fans, but gaming magazines typically focus on what's new and hot at the moment, and rarely have a special feature on an "old" game.

Even though we're approaching the seven year anniversary of Goldeneye's release, so many things (including the Citadel) have been discovered during the past year. This truly adds to the legend of Goldeneye, where only a handful of games have managed to capture an audience for the ages.

A question I had concerns Goldeneye Gameshark codes. I tried to use a Xenia head on the frigate for the guards, and a 006 head for the hostages. you said that both of these heads are not removable from the booty, so I didn't put anything in for the body. I tried to load the frigate, and the game went black.

The thing about the character heads not being removable from their bodies, means that you can't use their heads on anyone else's body... So there's no way to have Xenia's head on a guard's body, or Trevelyan's head on another body other than his own.

If you'd like to have Xenia and/or 006 appear on the Frigate, you'd need to put in a code for each of their heads, then a code to change each guards' body, matching it up with the guard's head you're replacing, so that they'll both have their own bodies, and the game won't crash.

Just a brief Perfect Dark question... It's about this page specifically: http://perfectdark.detstar.com/weapons/strengths.asp
You rank the weapons here, but as you know, the Callisto NTG has two modes (rapid-fire and High Impact). Does it do the same damage in both modes? If not, which mode is the site referencing?
-DS-

It's been a while since I conducted that weapon test experiment, but as far as I can remember, the rankings shown there are based on the primary mode for all weapons. So to answer your question, it's most likely the normal shells that were used for the testing.

The high impact shells for the Callisto NTG definitely pack a bigger punch, and it would be interesting to find out how the high impact shells compare with the other weapons listed there... But that's an experiment for another day.

What are some secret codes and tricks that can be achieved in Goldeneye without a GameShark? For example, is it possible to go to the island in the Dam level without a gameShark?

All of the known button codes for Goldeneye that don't involve a Gameshark, are posted in the 'Button Codes' section of the Goldeneye website.

About the Island on the Dam though, it's definitely not possible to get there without a Gameshark or Action Replay. The reason is because we're not even supposed to be able to go there. The GS/AR devices trick the game into letting us pass through the invisible barriers that surround the dock, and walk right over the water to the distant island.

this is about sonic and tails. and yes, they are playable characters in Super Smash Bros Melee. trust ME. if u have the game, then beat 25-30 on cruel melee and then they will come. still say ya can't. have you tried? is it hard? exactly. just do it play over and over and over till u get it with Roy. then defeat them and they will be yours. there is more in the game than the 25 characters. there is room for 2 more. just try it until u get to 25. see who appears. then u will believe. EGM was not kidding this time.

Wow, thanks for enlightening me. Up until this point, I was convinced that Sonic and Tails were nowhere to be found in Melee. Boy, do I ever feel dumb now...

But you probably don't happen to have access to a digital camera to share this 'discovery' with the world, do you... I thought not. Damn, what rotten luck...

Did you know that if you're skilled enough to score 50 KOs on Cruel Melee, you'll be rewarded with a giant silver pigeon? Trust me...

i just wanna say that you don't know what your talking about the Goldeneye guns! the zmg (9mm) from the game isn't an uzi and the ar33 looks nothing like the M16. they might kinda look like that by their not what you say the are. duh!!!

A screenshot from the game's memory, showing 'Ruger' (Cougar Magnum), 'Skorpion' (Klobb), and 'Spectre' (Phantom)

There's a constant debate as to exactly which real-life weapons Rareware used when modeling the guns found in Goldeneye 007. It's hard to analyze the formations of polygons that were constructed way back in 1997, and I've heard never-ending disagreements about weapons like the AR33, ZMG 9mm, and even the KF7 Soviet.

Of course the piece of evidence that can be most accurately used, are the names of the weapons as they appear when using the Gameshark's Memory Editor. Although the weapons in our game might not look exactly like their real-life counterparts, the Memory Editor gives a good insight as to what Rareware intended the weapons to be.

The game did feature guns with these actual names at one time (as is evidenced by a few pre-release screenshots), but they were changed before the game was completed, likely due to legal issues.

I'd just like to know who is the best racer to choose to beat F-Zero GX. I'm trying to finish the expert mode, and not having much luck. Who can win the easiest?

Each F-Zero racing machine is unique, and you can win with all of them by using their advantages with different driving styles. To better your chances, it might be a good idea to choose a well-balanced machine. Although your machine selection is completely a matter of personal preference, the Hyper Speeder and White Cat both offer balanced features with excellent grip. The Hyper Speeder could have a bit of an edge here, because when it reaches maximum speed, it's among the fastest machines in the game.

hey det i was wondering have you noticed the way the level cheats in Goldeneye 007 are ordered agent, secret agent, 00 agent and so on? well the dam, the very first level the cheat to get paintball mode is completed by secret agent instead of agent was it possible that there was a level before the dam?

Yes, the cheats do indeed follow a predictable pattern. Shortly after I began earning the cheats way back in 1997, I quickly found out how convenient it was to figure out the cheat requirements for each mission...

It seems a bit strange that the very first mission of the game features a cheat on the middle difficulty (Secret Agent) instead of the easiest difficulty (Agent).... But it actually works out with the total number of levels, since there are 20 missions...

Since Rareware wanted the cheat for Egyptian (the final mission) to be unlocked on the hardest difficulty (00 Agent), they worked their way backwards from end, instead of going forward from the beginning... Which of course left the very first mission's cheat to be earned on the rather odd Secret Agent difficulty. Had the game featured 21 missions, it would have worked out perfectly.

You haven't posted anything for the arenas of Perfect Dark's multiplayer yet. i mean, i would like to know what the levels are based on.

It's a good thing that you brought this to my attention...

Quite a while ago, I put together a feature for every Combat Simulator arena, and the characters that blend in best with the level background. A link to the page was posted with the site updates, but somehow was never added to the left navigation bar. So, this section has been there for a long time, but since there's no link to it anymore, no one would have been able to find it.

I've added the link to the navigation bar, and you can also check out the page here:
http://perfectdark.detstar.com/arenas/characters.asp

Thanks for inadvertently reminding me about this page... With so many different sections and areas of Detstar, it's easy to lose track of a page every now and then.

As for what the arenas are based on, most of them are only roughly based on their solo mission counterparts. It's too bad that some of the actual mission levels weren't available here, but some of the renderings are as follows:
Skedar: Obviously this one came from the battle shrine, as the textures and rock formations should look quite familiar.
Pipes: This one really resembles the dataDyne Investigation mission.
Area 52: The idea definitely came from Area 51, but aside from the name and a bit of the looks, there aren't a whole lot of similarities.
G5 Building: Looks incredibly similar to the walls of the actual G5 building, but the layout is completely different. Still though, it's a great map for multiplayer.
Grid:
This one is supposively another section G5 building from mission mode... Although Matrix fans are sure to recognize it from elsewhere...
Villa:
I personally don't care much for this arena, but I can't speak for everyone... I really would have preferred the actual Villa from solo.
Ruins: Another arena based on the Skedar missions, but aside from the colors and textures, it's completely different.

Hi, I was looking at your multi-player maps for Goldeneye and noticed you have the cradle and statue as levels for multi-player. I have searched and have found no conclusion on how to get these two levels. I was wondering if it is possible and if so, how to achieve this.

The Cradle and Statue were created for Multiplayer, complete with weapons, body armor, and everything... But for some strange reason, Rareware decided not to make them available for the final game.

But by using a Gameshark cheat device, you can enter a one line code that will allow you to choose the Statue or the Cradle in Multiplayer. The Gameshark code is 8102A8F2 0001. You can head to Multiplayer mode and set your options, then head back out to "mission" mode and choose either the Cradle or Statue and battle it out in one of these long lost arenas.

I have always been a huge fan of the Nintendo company. When I heard that Perfect Dark Zero and all Rareware games are going to X-Box, I couldn't believe it. I don't want to buy an X-Box just to get Perfect Dark Zero.

Yeah, the situation really sucks. Rareware recognized that they could drastically increase their profits by teaming up with Microsoft. It was a smart business move on their part, but also kinda selfish of them to turn their backs on their fans. It wouldn't be so bad if they had been honest with us... But they really jerked around with us by planning Perfect Dark Zero for the GameCube, only to pull it back, and deny that the game was even under development, all the while ignoring us and giving us the runaround... Then a year later, the announcement that their shares had been sold to the evil Microsoft Corporation, and that the next Perfect Dark game would in fact be released for the X-Box.

Rareware has become shady, dishonest, and manipulative... Which is why I'm sure they'll be an excellent business partner for Microsoft. Sure, I'd take an X-Box if one was given to me... But I have no plans on spending my hard earned cash on an X-Box, especially when I spend enough time cursing at the Microsoft computer software that I already own...

Best Goldeneye site ever. Period.

Glad you enjoyed all that stuff that's been put together over the years.
Your message was short and sweet... Kinda like Bond's fling with Natalya.
