Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

A
good mix of questions from different games... The mailbag messages
below are usually selected to create a good mix, but Goldeneye 007
is still very common in my mailbox. I'm just bringing it up, because
it's August...
And this year just
happens to be lucky number 7 for Goldeneye 007, which was released
in August of 1997... (Well, technically it was released on July
31, but it was August before this surprise hit took gamers by storm).
Seven years ago this summer, gamers were feeding their Goldeneye
addictions with endless nights of Multiplayer deathmatches. And
when a gamesite that covers a bunch of recent games still receives
tons of questions about a seven year old game, it's definitely saying
something about the depth and replay value.

I'd like to say that I've started to
fiddle around with Goldeneye 007's memory editor, and I've
found some weird stuff. I noticed twice in the item lists, an item
called "heroine". I don't recall seeing that item on your
beta items list on your site. Could it be an item we haven't found
before?
Contrary to what you may have heard, James
Bond doesn't do any drugs in Goldeneye 007... (He did consume more
than his fair share of Vodka Martinis, but that's another story...)
While many people seem to think that there's a long lost stash of
'heroin' in the game, the spelling of 'heroine' has been accepted
by most Goldeneye fans as the female version of 'hero', which possibly
refers to Natalya. Exactly what this means, and why it's in there
with a bunch of items, we're really not sure.

I finally got the Master Class circuit
on F-Zero GX, and am unlocking character movies. I have now
- The Skull's, Black Bull's, Pico's and Lily Flyer's. Are there any
movies in particular worth getting, in terms of comedy/coolness value?
After
taking a quick glance through the characters, here are some of the
better videos... Of course since they're the ones most worth watching,
some of them are also among the hardest to earn on the Master Class:
Captain Falcon, Pico, Deathborn, Zoda, BioRex, Draq, Black Shadow,
Don Genie and QQQ. |

I
bought Perfect Dark, but have no instruction booklet.
I have read your site, and loved it. Can you help me with finding
info that is usually in the instruction booklet (i.e.: controls,
how everything works etc.)?
Normally when I buy a game, I can't wait to open the box and get
into the action... Which is why for the most-part, my instruction
manuals remain unread (and usually in mint condition).
But I do keep all of my booklets for reference, to occasionally
look up a small detail or feature. I've scanned a few of the most
important pages of the Perfect Dark instruction booklet, and here
they are...
Scanned sections from the booklet include; The Controls (pages
6-7), The Quick Menu & CamSpy (pages
8-9),
and Multiplayer Advanced Setup & Simulant Menu (pages
16-17). Enjoy.

Why does everyone believe that sonic
and/or tails are playable characters in Super Smash Bros Melee?
There just is no reason for these rumors. If you check the SSBM
official website no fast hedgehogs here. And it says that there
are all the characters. IT couldn't be a glitch because a whole
new character (that wasn't a clone) would be a huge glitch that
Nintendo would've found.
I
completely agree with you. These people are likely just bored, and
feel like wasting my time. That's for the people who claim that
they've unlocked them, that is.
As for the others who simply want to believe that Sonic and Tails
are in Melee, I suppose it's just wishful thinking. They want them
to be there so bad, and they have a hard time believing that something
they read in a magazine isn't true.
EGM really should stop publishing fake codes like this... I myself
could create some seriously bogus rumors about practically any featured
game, post them on Detstar, and people would surely believe what
they read...
Sure, it was just a fun little prank by EGM... But it probably pisses
me off more than most people, because I have to read about it in
my mailbox every day. Perhaps EGM is just unaware of the responsibility
they have for being a respectable gaming magazine. Just because
you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

You
said that Donkey Kong was in all three Mario Kart games. Actually,
the ape in the original was Donkey Kong Junior.
It was indeed
Donkey Kong Junior who appeared on Super Mario Kart for the SNES.
But Rareware has since transformed Donkey Kong Junior into the modern
day Donkey Kong. I guess DK lost the name "Junior" now that he wasn't
a baby ape anymore.
The evolution of the former Donkey Kong Junior also caused the original
Donkey Kong (The one who first started throwing barrels at Mario)
to become Cranky Kong.

Is Perfect Dark set in America?
Yes, Perfect Dark
takes place in the USA. (Except for the later missions that are set in
space and on the Skedar homeworld...) The dataDyne building is in Seattle,
Washington; and the G5 Building is in Chicago, Illinois. And of course,
there's the infamous Area 51, located in the Nevada desert.
I was messing around with the random
character code in Goldeneye 007's mission mode and I stumbled
upon this character once. I heard on your site that the images and
text of Connery were still in the game's memory but the graphics for
his suit weren't. I just wanted to know if you are really sure that
it isn't because I am 100% sure I saw him(white suit with little red
flower in his pocket. Please let me know about it.
I'm
sorry to shoot down your hopes of finding the long lost Bond, but
the character suit that you saw almost certainly belongs to the scientist...
The scientists have a red pen in their front pocket, which many people
have confused for Connery's corsage. The scientists are also wearing
neckties, while Connery's infamous white tuxedo has a bowtie.
Even though there aren't any Gameshark codes to bring back Connery's
tuxedo, SubDrag shows us that the tuxedo is still inside the Goldeneye
ROM... Check out http://www.rarewitchproject.com/ |

Hello
Det
This is about beta pictures, mainly Goldeneye and Perfect
Dark, I see beta screenshots and I wonder where they came from.
A lot of the screenshots are from old gaming magazines, before the games
were even released. The previews for these games often showed differences
between the finished and unfinished versions.
Aside from the dozens of old magazines where these screenshots originated,
some of them were snapped from a handful of 'beta' video clips.
Some screenshots aren't even actually 'beta' screenshots, but just
Gameshark codes that show beta features.
Other screenshots were even published by Rareware on their website...
Unfortunately, these shots, along with a lot of really nice Goldeneye/Perfect
Dark artwork and graphics were immediately removed when Microsoft
bought Rare.
|
How did you take the screenshots from your Perfect
Dark game and put them on your site while playing the game without pausing?
With a great deal of difficulty... Luckily with
only one hand, you can still move and fire with N64 controllers, so the
other hand (and sometimes face) can snap pictures. It ain't easy, but it
gets the job done... I get killed often while doing this, which is while
the Invincibility cheat comes in handy.
