Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually, I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've posted a few of them below.

September 6, 2004

September's always a dreadful month... It means the nice weather is almost over, but even worse is the fact that countless gamers are heading back to the classroom. Despite this setback, I'm sure that Detstar gamesites will be popping up on school computers all around the world. It's only matter of time before players get bored of all those assignments, and decide take a quick break from 'learning' to check out their favorite games.

So for all of you who are stuck in the jail that lets you come home at night, don't let it stop you from sending in questions... Maybe I'll have time to send a reply to your question... And who knows, maybe you'll even be lucky enough to have it posted here. That part all depends on the random mail sorting done by the helper monkeys...

Am I going Crazy or do you see a face here in Perfect Dark? I think it resembles Adolf Hitler. It spooked me a little bit

(The shot was spotted in the 2nd Elvis in Area 51 mystery page, regarding Area 51 Escape mission)
After taking a second look, I don't believe that you are crazy... It does indeed look like Hitler is making an appearance from beyond the grave. Truly, it's a very bizarre and disturbing discovery. I didn't think Rareware had turned evil until they joined the Microsoft Corporation, but now there's evidence of evil affiliations dating back to 1999...

Hi, to start I just want to tell you that I'm a FAN of Goldeneye and I love your site. CONGRATULATIONS! I'm writing you to tell you somthing about multiplayer in Goldeneye 007 that maybe you alredy know but I did not find it on your site. In all multiplayer levels when you respawn after being killed, the respawn points are in a set order, and not random. So in license to kill it is very good to know this thing.

Unlike Perfect Dark, Goldeneye's multiplayer spawn points are completely predictable, although it's not something that's easily noticed. I think I had the game for a year or so before I realized something was fishy in the Facility when I myself could somehow 'predict' that someone was going to reappear in the vent, or reappear at the end of the hall. So, I conducted a test to prove the theory. It's possible to become almost unbeatable in the Facility, by aggressively (and cheaply) rushing to the memorized spawn points and eliminating your opponents before they can arm themselves with good weapons.

The only variable in this equation, is if a living character is too close to the next spawn point... In this case, the computer will skip it, and make your freshly killed opponent re-appear at the next location in the order.

It would be quite a project to map out all of these spawn points for each level. It's something that I considered doing a long time ago for use on the site, but it would be a time consuming project, while new pages for other games were needed.

How did you get so good at Perfect Dark?

Although I've finished Perfect Dark, I'm nowhere near as good as some players are. There are hardcore fans out there who still play PD for many hours each week. All that practice makes a difference, plus making sure to observe and learn from everything they've experienced during gameplay. These 'lessons' for what to do, and instantly react to any given situation is what separates the most deadly PD players from the rest of the pack. These PD 'Professionals', always know when to dodge, when to retreat, and when to move in for the kill. Plus, the precise and deadly aim that becomes second nature after countless hours of practice.
While I personally didn't spend as much time playing Perfect Dark as many other players, I did log quite a few hours in Goldeneye. The gameplay of the two games is quite similar, so I basically just took my Goldeneye skills, and adapted to Perfect Dark.

Many people would love to play as Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros Melee. I myself would love too but they aren't in there. Sonic and Tails would have been in SSBM if they was 'true' Nintendo characters. They have games on the Sega Genesis, Dreamcast and so on and now appearing on Gamecube.

Also if they was in there they would have a stage based on one of the Sonic games and items from the games. Wouldn't they? If Sonic and Tails were a combo character like Ice Climbers, they would only take up one space and leave an extra space.

If your gonna say a character is in SSBM thats not have some prove and don't say 'My camera got stolen' or 'It don't work'. Maybe you people should get a life. Hell, next thing people will say is that James Bond or Sephiroth is in there. Thanks for reading this Det.

Yes it's quite sad, but some people don't seem to have anything better to do. Technically though, Nintendo probably could have included Sonic and Tails now that they're working together with SEGA... There likely would have been a few legal issues to work out, but this would have been much easier now that Nintendo and SEGA are co-operating. But I'm not sure if this deal went through before the creation of SSBM. Either way though, they're definitely not in Melee, despite what people claim. Extra ‘super secret’ characters would more likely to be ‘true’ Nintendo characters like Wario or Waluigi instead of Sonic and Tails.

And conveniently enough, every single person who claims to have found something extraordinary in any game never seems to be able to send me any screenshots to back it up.

In a world full of phone cameras and high tech toys, it’s kinda hard to believe that an individual doesn’t know at least one person who they can borrow a device from to snap a shots of an amazing discovery.

If they don't own a digital camera or know anyone who does, (or had it 'stolen' like you said), they just say that they'll send pics 'soon', and I never hear from them again...

Hi Det, I don't know if this's the right place to ask this, but... Would you happen to know why Rareware deleted it's Perfect Dark site? I never got round to see it.

Following Rare's sale of their shares to the evil Microsoft Corporation, Rareware has practically washed their hands of all previous projects with Nintendo. The Perfect Dark website was another casualty of this multi-million dollar business deal. It's a shame, because "PerfectDark.com" appears in a whole bunch of promotional places, and now the website doesn't exist anymore. Now typing that URL will just lead you to Rareware's new homepage, where they try and corrupt the visitor's mind by trying to convince their 'fans' to join them on the X-Box. "The power of the dark side compels you!"

I suppose now that Rareware has teamed up with Microsoft, they're too good to want to keep their history and memories of great games alive.

I was wondering if you have any verification of the rumor: In Super Smash Bros. Melee, to unlock the secret Dragon Temple arena, play as either Marth or Roy. You must beat the All star mode on the hardest difficulty without using a continue.

It seems to be BS, especially since Sound Test requires all arenas to be unlocked, and Dragon Temple is never mentioned. But I have seen rumors (no screenshots, etc.) on some pretty prestigious sites.

I've heard of this fabled 'Dragon Temple', but haven't seen any evidence at all to back it up. Just like the rumors surrounding Toad, Sonic & Tails, this one seems to be completely bogus. Many of these rumors seem to offer rewards only for nearly impossible accomplishments, which is one of their main draws... If something is incredibly difficult to do, fewer players will be able to do it, and the rumor can 'live' for a bit longer before it's exposed as a fraud.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update your site, dude! its been a month and we all want to see sumthin' new,
like a Timesplitters2 site, and could i have a job there?
plz

Dude, it's just not that easy. All of this content takes plenty of time to research, organize, and finally transform the raw data into pretty webpages for everyone to see. With five gamesites to manage, I get countless requests from fans of every gamesite to add more content to their favorite website. Although it's nice of you to politely request that an entirely new gamesite be created for TimeSplitters 2, it's just not gonna happen. The game kicks ass, and is the only true "Goldeneye 007-equivalent" for the GameCube. The concept of a TS2 website actually received some serious consideration in 2002. Unfortunately my extra time was already tied up with the existing gamesites, as well as other little annoying things like going to work and that other nonsense...

As for job openings here at Detstar, there's currently an position for another helper monkey to sort e-mail...
And also another spot as a helper-monkey-helper. But both jobs suck, and only pay in bananas.

If Toad isn't a secret character in Super Smash Bros Melee, and thier isn't anymore secret characters, then why are thier 2 spaces left in the character slots?

That's a good question. It definitely seems like there are two empty spaces, waiting to be filled. With the number of characters that were created for the game, and only enough room for three rows of characters, maybe this is just the way the selection lineup worked out. Or perhaps these blank spaces were included just to grab our curiosity.

Either way, no additional characters can be unlocked, even with an Action Replay cheat device... Even while using codes that were designed to unlock 'All Characters'. So, the odds are what you've already seen is all you can get. I love hidden characters as much as the next player, but in the case of Melee, I just don't believe there are any more secret characters to be found.

Hi det. I would just like to say that I love your site. Your Perfect Dark site is easily the coolest site on the net, and your articles about the weird stuff like the Maian Mystery are really informative (the part with the stats to become perfect#1 was very helpful). I also really like your Goldeneye site. The information that you have compiled there helped me appreciate just how cool and mysterious of a game it is (I wish I had my own N64 Gameshark so that I could recreate some of the fantastic pictures in your photo gallery). I do have one question, though. What happened to your forums? The link to them isn't on your home page. They were really cool and I hope that you bring them back (mainly because this is the only site that I know of that I can curse at people who pissed me off without some jerk-off administrator leaning over my shoulder the whole time). So I'll close by saying that if anyone has any questions about Goldeneye and Perfect Dark they can come here and find all that they need and more. Thank you for a great website.

Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are indeed great games, which was one of the main reasons for jamming so much content into those gamesites. There are all kinds of neat things in the PD website, but you can thank Hutz for the Maian Mystery page.

As for the forums, unfortunately they had to be closed down. They're a great place to talk about the featured games, as well as any other random topic that people feel like discussing. Despite how much people enjoy the forums, the heavy usage led to the shutdown. The forums may eventually be able to re-open, but only with a better (and more expensive) setup.

Detstar,
You Said It Took You FOREVER To Get Oddjob In The Random Enemys Code
Well.....My Sister Was Messing Around With Goldneye. I Turned On The Random Enemys Code. First, She Had All Natalyas. Then...........Oddjob!! I Had To Record It!!

P.S.--It Took 6-10 Trys To Get Oddjob.

That's just the thing with Random Enemies... You never know who you're gonna get. I had everyone dressed in James Bond suits a few times before I got to see Oddjob, who was the last of the classic villains that I got to see.

I can't remember the first character I saw when using my Gameshark for the first time, but I got the Janus Special Forces and the Jungle Commandos within the first two attempts. I eventually got to see Mayday, Jaws, and Baron Samedi... And then some of these characters again until Oddjob finally appeared.

Luckily, new Gameshark codes since then have made it MUCH easier to get Oddjob and Mayday to appear in a mission...
