Mailbag
Ah, the joys of answering e-mail. Actually,
I wouldn't wish this task on my worst enemy. So many questions, so little
time... I do answer as many e-mails as I have time for though, and I've
posted a few of them below.

Bond Theme...
Questions
about every featured game are always flowing into my mailbox...
But a big surprise has to be at the amount of Goldeneye questions
that still arrive. Some people are just now picking up the game
for the first time, while other longtime players are still curious
about the game that has earned a reputation as a classic.
On a good note,
I've finally stopped receiving 'reports' from people claiming to
have found Oddjob and May Day hidden inside the game's mission mode.
Of course I realize in writing this, someoene's bound to make up
another lame story of seeing these characters somewhere outside
of Multiplayer... And possibly after viewing some of the newest
Gameshark images in the Goldeneye Screenshot Gallery.
I'm always getting
new questions about Goldeneye, and a few of them are rather unique.
Some are about the game, while others pertain to Detstar's Goldeneye
website. So rather than the usual mix of all games, here's an entire
Mailbag dedicated to this favorite N64 title.

Well,
I must say you are the ULTIMATE source on the game, that to this
date still facinates me. But I think I have an answer to one of
your qurstions. It is about the GoldenEye movie, and the Commander
in the Bunker. When you watch the movie, that guy is who Ouromov
steals the goldeneye key from. That is probably why he is in the
game.
The
Goldeneye movie definitely features a guard in the Russian Commandant
uniform. Something else from the movie that involved the Commandant
character is this 'GoldenEye'
computer terminal. Strange thing is, this exact same computer isn't
found in the final game, and can only be activated with a Gameshark...

Det-
First of all, I think that your site kicks butt. What other site
can tell there is a freighter called the Goldeneye, or there is
a real eurochopper(copter). Also no other site I have ever been
has so many facts, your Beta section is so in depth, I couldn't
believe that there were all scar-faced guards, then blond ones.
Also, I had no idea before there even was the island, or the "all
bonds" cheat, I didn't at all what the beta stages were like.
Also, I am sure this is a bunch of bull crap, but I found out on
this one site, that someone he knew e-mailed a guy at rare to try
and get a version with all the beta items, spent three hundred dollars
on it, (The guy agreed, ya right) and got a regular version of it.
So he e-mailed another guy, he promised it, and he got another regular
Goldeneye.
Anyway, Great Site. I LOVE GOLDENEYE -Zack
Visitors of the Goldeneye site often comment
about just how many pages there are to look at. Many players even
spend days, reading every single page of the website. 'Beta' stuff
is definitely the most fascinating part of Goldeneye. Although we'll
never be able to experience a lot of it firsthand, the screenshots
taken during the game's development have captured players' imaginations
for years. It's nice to be able to re-create some of beta Goldeneye
using Gameshark codes,
So
many people believe that 'beta' is actually a completely separate
(and playable version) of the game... So it appears as if a few
people have tried to take advantage of guilible players.
I've heard a few stories of people spending hundreds of dollars
to buy a 'beta version' of Goldeneye, only to be ripped off.
It's bad that
these people were tricked into wasting their money, but I can't
feel completely sorry for them... I wish I had that much money to
waste on a cartridge that doesn't exist. I honestly have no idea
what they were expecting to receive.... What did they think? That
a 'beta version' was just going to magically arrive in the mail,
and they'd just pop it in their N64 and start playing?

Just out of curiosity.. everone knows
about the Goldeneye 007 button codes and how they weren't "released"
by Rare until some years after Goldeneye 007 was released. But if
Rare never intended on realeasng the codes to the public, why make
'em in the first place? Or did they plann to tease the players and
realese them years later?
The built in Button Codes were included
by Rareware, most likely just for testing purposes as the game was
being completed. Then, after the game was released, only people
who worked on the game would be able to use them, because they're
way to complicated for anyone to guess manually. However, by using
a Gameshark, a fellow by the name of Dr. Ian was able to look inside
Goldeneye's memory, and discover the button codes by using the known
button code for the extra Multiplayer characters. After he found
the other codes, Rareware had no choice but to "release"
them, or face e-mails and questions every day regarding these newfound
codes. I hope this answers your question.

Hey is there really a bond game on super
Nintendo?
Not
that I'm aware of... According to a few things I've read though, plans
for Goldeneye 007 originated on paper for the SNES. Although I haven't
seen any solid evidence to support the SNES Goldeneye, the game was
originally designed as a rail-shooter game, where you would be pushed
along an invisible track, shooting at enemies as they came your way.
This rail-style shooting system likely would have been the only possible
way to make a first person shooter on the Super NES. Luckily the N64
was on the way, making for much more enjoyable and realistic (and
not to mention 3-Dimensional) Bond action.
Many people may have seen 2-dimensional screenshots of a Bond game,
but they were made by a talented pixel graphic artist by the name
of Stormcloud 75. These screenshots are fictitious, and were created
for entertainment value only. Check out Storm's website to see all
of his pics: http://www.geocities.com/smokecloud75/

I noticed a spelling mistake in a Goldeneye
mission briefing for the Silo mission, it spells Kirghistan. it
is actually Kyrgyzstan.
Although it definitely isn't spelled correctly, it seems as if Rareware
did that on purpose... That mission isn't the only mission that
has an altered name... The game's very first mission takes place
in Arkangelsk... The real-life spelling of that location is Arkangel,
if I remember correctly.

Your
goldeneye website rocks by the way and on the cradle level and bond
jumps on the bottom of the helacoptor there seems to be a red something
on the bottom of the helocoptor is it a bomb of some sort or what
is it
There are two small red lights on the chopper,
one on top, and one on the bottom. They aren't there for any real
reason, other than as fine details to make the chopper more complete.

Two li'l things about the Dam in Goldeneye
that have been bugging me for ages:
1) After going through the gate, the dam extends for a long distance
- only to find a solid concrete cubbyhole at the end, with no visible
door? I never understood the reason for this, as it appears as though
the green truck or even a tank could fit inside it. But why does
it just end, without any signs of continuing (i.e. a door)? Was
this a part of the level that Rare left out, along with the "blow-up-the-truck"
objective?
2) Whereabouts, in relation to the Dam, are the Facility and the
Runway? The Dam isn't visible from anywhere down on the Runway,
and the whole sequence of events just doesn't make sense to me.
My guess is
that the dam extends that long way just to make it look more real.
A dam actually would stretch for quite a distance, so Rareware probably
made it this way. I believe the Dam from the Goldeneye movie was
the same way, so it fits.

The Facility is below the dam. When you Bungee jump off of the Dam,
you're landing on top of the Facility vents. The Facility is a very
large building, and you're coming out of it as you leave the Runway.
Although you can only see part of the Facility building from the
Runway, I believe the actual Dam itself would be behind the mountains.

Your site is great but why don't you have any Real Sounds, songs from the Goldeneye game??
Good question. When the Goldeneye site first opened about five years ago, there were music downloads available. The downloads were eventually removed for various reasons, including copyright issues, and the hosting space required to store the files. Furthermore, players get to hear the music everytime they play the game anyway, so it wasn't a major thing to cut from the website. Some gamers find it repetitive listening to in-game music when they're not playing, while other gamers enjoy listening to the tracks from their favorite games.
My
friend keeps saying that in Goldeneye 007 there is a way to get the
helicopter to crash into the frigate as an ending scene rather then
the proper ending scene showing Bond acting cool in his crappy boat.
It sounds stupid but prehaps it was a beta ending.
Get your friend to actually show it happening, and wait for him to
make up some lame excuse as for why he can't do it. A screenshot of
the Pirate helicopter crashing into the Frigate is something that
can be found in the Screenshot Gallery, but it's just a trick done
using Gameshark codes. Another Gameshark code actually does make the
Pirate helicopter take off in the opening cinema scene, but it doesn't
crash into the ship as far as I know. |

This question has been lingering for a long time in my mind: Is it possible to get double weapons in mutiplayer? And if it it, can you tell me how? Thanks. By the way, your site rocks! Its a 100 on the 1 - 10 scale.
As far as I know, it's not possible - At least while playing the
game normally. I'm sure it would be something that could be possible
with Gameshark codes... Although there's one strange thing about
an existing Gameshark code, for all weapons - When this code is
attempted in Multiplayer, everyone ends up with a single version
of every weapon in the game... Not double like the code normally
does. There has to be another way...

On
your Goldeneye Site, (which is definitely the best Goldeneye site)
there's a short clip on the Video Downloads page showing Bond going
up the lost elevator and then killing a guard on one of the walkways.
I was just wondering where that clip originated from, and also if
there's a better quality version of it of it somewhere, I mean if
Rare released this clip to show off their game, they would've released
it in a better quality.
The clip originated from a special edition promo video, which was released before the Nintendo 64 was even out. In addition to the few seconds of Goldeneye, the video also showed StarFox 64 and Mario 64. The video itself would have available in higher quality, but the file was downsized in order to make it easier for players to download and watch. The clip is really neat, because even though it's short, there are three obvious differences between the 'beta' Silo and the Silo in our finished game. |

I noticed on your site you had gameshark
cheats to play team liscence to kill. Well, I wasn't aware that
you couldn't use liscence to kill in team mode in the first place,
but if you can't, just set all of your health handicaps to -10 instead
of the gameshark cheats, its faster, and has the same effect. In
fact, with body armor, you're STILL a one hit kill. Since health
handicap is greyed out in Lisence to Kill mode, I would assume that
it sets your health to -10 on its own when you select that mode
anyway.
License to Kill is one of my favorite modes, for the sheer frantic
pace of the game. Setting everyone's health to -10 is a quick and
easy way to play a simulated version of License to Kill while playing
with teams, but it's not completely foolproof. Most
of the weapons will function as if you truly were playing License
to Kill mode, but
some of the weaker weapons (ie, the Klobb) can sometimes take two
bullets to down someone.

How
did you make this picture?
Um... The picture made itself?
The screenshot isn't fake, but it not actually General Ourumov standing
there. It certainly does look like him, but it's actually a Gameshark
code to alter your perception... |
