F-Zero GX: Time Attack
Written by Hutz
Instead of competing for a prize against twenty-nine
blood-thirsty savages, in Time Attack your only enemy is the clock as you
race for three laps in an attempt to make and break records. If you do well
enough, you'll even unlock special Staff Ghosts that have insane records.
These times were made by the development staff (presumably), and since they
know the game inside and out, you'll need to do the same in order to win
against them.
To unlock the Staff Ghost for a track, you need to cross the finish line
a maximum of ten seconds after the ghost time. Here are the times that each
ghost has set, as well as which machine was used - to unlock the ghost,
your time cannot exceed ten seconds higher than the given time. The
machines listed below are merely the machines piloted by the Staff Ghosts...
But of course you can choose any machine to unlock or defeat these ghosts:
Unlocking
a Staff Ghost will also net you 25 tickets. To compete against a Staff
Ghost, press Y to bring up the Ghost menu on the Course Select screen,
then press X to activate the Ghost. |
Once you've spent grueling hours unlocking every Staff Ghost, the
REAL challenge begins: beating those insane drivers. Most hardcore
GX players will tell you that snaking is NOT a real way to win against
these ghosts. It may work, but it's still possible to beat the ghosts
without this controversial technique. Here are several tips to get
you started.
Picking the right machine is absolutely crucial to defeating a Staff
Ghost. Depending on the course, your machine needs to have the correct
balance of speed, boost, and cornering. Without cornering, you'll
lose much speed as you slide and drift around corners that may not
require those moves. Often, you can use the same machine as the Staff
Ghost.
Your performance settings will fine-tune the balance of speed and
maneuverability on the track. You'll want to be able to set your machine
to somewhere near Max Speed, since you won't need acceleration much
as you perfect your technique on a course. |
On
the track, make as few turns as necessary and stick as close to the
inside as possible when making turns. Remember, it's better to use
sliding (control stick) sparingly, and try not to use drifts (L &
R buttons) unless the course absolutely demands it. |
|
To start yourself off, follow the exact path the Staff Ghost takes.
As you see the benefits of the given path, try to perfect your technique
by analyzing your own ghosts (loaded automatically when you retry
a course). Even slight deviations from the path can build up and
lead to a second or two of wasted time.
Unless you're given a choice and would
rather take a Pit Zone, always hit every Dash Zone on the track.
In Cylinder Knot and Cylinder Wave, this can be difficult to do,
but once you memorize the course, you'll have the reflexes necessary
to grab every free speed boost on the track. Having a machine with
high Boost is a great way to maximize each Dash Zone.
Once you get boost power, do not let
any of your spare energy go to waste. Even if you have a sliver
of energy left, it's best to use every ounce of boost you can squeeze
out of your machine before each Pit Zone. When you perfect a course,
you won't need any extra energy to ensure survival. Make sure to
get in as much Pit Zone time as needed to completely refill your
energy, so don't boost through them until your energy is already
almost full.

Don't
expect to beat a Staff Ghost in a few tries unless you plan to use
snaking (which many consider cheating). Although some of the ghosts
may seem impossible to defeat, they're all possible to beat with the
correct machine, settings, and racing technique. Practice makes perfect. |
