Mario Kart Double Dash: Shortcuts

Written by DetErest

Who ever said that you had to play fairly? There are several tracks where you can save some serious time by taking a little side trip, and I'm showing the three coolest ones here. Two of them are intended shortcuts - These two were deliberately created by the makers of the game. But the most daring shortcut is a tricky little jump over a canyon...

Yoshi Circuit
The shortcut here takes you underground... But you'll need to be lucky enough to have a Mushroom to boost yourself to this hidden passageway...

After you exit the tunnel and are about halfway through this course, look for a red and white striped railing on your left side. As you slide around the corner, watch as the railing ends. This is what you'll use as your guide to line yourself up for this shortcut.
As you slide out onto the grass, line yourself pretty well parallel to the paved road. The tunnel is sticking out of the island, just above the water. Boost a few kart lengths before you go over the edge, and you should have enough speed to launch yourself into this tunnel.
It's a curved little path that's hidden below the surface of Yoshi Circuit, but it generally follows a straight line.
Upon exiting, you'll fly through the air a little bit, and find yourself back on the beaten path on this tight corner.

DK Mountain
The most dangerous of all shortcuts can be found on DK Mountain. It's tricky, and will probably take some practice. But once you get it down, it can be very useful in Time Trials, Grand Prix, and Versus mode. It helps to have a Mushroom here, but on 150cc, you can get by with a mini-turbo.

Slide up on the grass to get yourself as far away from the right fence as possible. You'll need a bit of distance to swing yourself around to hop over the canyon. As you slide, you'll want to build up a charge with your mini turbo to give yourself a bit of a boost.
In this screenshot, I'm completely swung around, in perfect position, facing the canyon. I'm still sliding, but now I'm going to let my kart surge forward. This is 150cc, so I didn't need a Mushroom for enough speed - Only the boost from my mini-turbo.
Sailing over the gap... The tricky part is lining yourself up to fly over the canyon, and not launching yourself off at a bad angle and falling into the canyon.
Safely on ground again, avoiding the long trek around the canyon, that's no doubt littered with bananas and other traps.

Dino Dino Jungle
This is another shortcut that requires the use of a Mushroom. The jump is located inside the cave at the very top of the mountain.

When you enter the cave, you normally head along the left side. But if you slide to the right instead...
You'll find a ramp made of big wooden logs. This ramp will slow you down bigtime, but you'll have enough speed to clear it with a Mushroom boost.
After flying off of this jump, there's a lone question block available for pickup. Now I've jumped into first place, snagged an item, plus avoided those annoying water traps.
