Mario Kart Double Dash: Interesting Stuff

Written by DetErest

As with many of Nintendo games, Double Dash is loaded with all kinds of hidden details for the avid player to notice. Few of these things really contribute to the gameplay, but they're always neat to discover.

If you'd like to submit something you've found that hasn't been posted on either page so far, feel free to send it to DetErest@detstar.com.

Race of a Lifetime...
Shortly after the starting line on Daisy's Cruiser, there's a section of track made of a metal grating. If you look at just the right angle, you can actually spot a few lifeboats below. It's a hidden detail for sure, because it never caught my attention before.

Go For a Dip...
Many players have probably accidentally slid (or got bumped) into the swimming pool once or twice on Daisy's Cruiser... But if you have a look at the edge when the water is perfectly still, you can actually see a portrait of Princess Daisy at the bottom.

Mario Kart for GameCube...
Just a detail that I found by accident on Mario Circuit. Around the racetrack, there are giant stars on the fence. But if you look closely at them, you'll notice that they say "Mario Kart", and have a picture of Mario's hat. These stars also feature the Nintendo GameCube logo.

Star Light, Star Bright...
Again on Mario Circuit, there's a small detail inside the tunnel about halfway through the lap... If you look above, you can spot tiny star-shaped lights that line the sides of the tunnel.

Beach Blast...
Once you get by the dangerous sandy water area of Peach Beach (the part that's littered with annoying beach creatures), there's a giant pink archway with question blocks underneath it. If you stop and examine the giant pink formation, you'll be able to see faint starfish shaped on the sides of it.

Ad-Aware...
More advertisements on the walls, this time found on Yoshi Circuit. The first ad is simply for "Mario Kart", which coincidentally enough features Toad, who is on the back of the go-kart here. The second ad, is simply for something called "Super Star".

More Star Power...
The people at Nintendo sure have a thing for stars... Yet another series of stars has been spotted, this time in the tunnel of Yoshi Circuit. Each of the pillars that support the cement tunnel has a single Starman etched onto it.

Silver Arches...
Something that I just noticed this afternoon while racing on Daisy's Cruiser, was the archway right after the set of stairs. You can clearly see a black "Mario Kart" logo etched overhead.

Porthole Peeking...
A previous 'Stuff update showed the Mushrooms and Stars that could be found on the walls of Daisy's Cruiser. And just after the ship's dining room, there's a set of doors with Flowers surrounding the portholes. But what's strange about this set of doors, is that they don't seem to lead anywhere... From certain angles, you can just barely see inside, and spot lights hanging from the ceiling. You can even head around to the other side, and look in there as well. There doesn't seem to be a way to open the doors, but it's surprising that there would be details inside a room that you can't get to...

Your Ads Here...
Players from Mario Kart 64 might remember the "Koopa Air" billboards that could be seen off in the distance (in the Kalamari Desert, if I remember correctly...). A "Koopa Sport" billboard can be spotted in MKDD, here inside the Wario Colosseum. Also inside the Colosseum, is a "Wario Kart" logo that was modeled after the Nintendo logo.

More ads inside the Colosseum, including one for the "Wario GrandPrix". On the right, we see a distant shot with three different billboards, including one that reads "Super Wario".

Star-Spangled Pathway...
When you're driving on the Mushroom Bridge, you can actually spot very faint stars sprinkled all over the pavement. I hadn't noticed this detail after countless races here, but after spotting it, I can't help but see stars everywhere when I play on this track.

Prehistoric Patterns...
As I was screaming through the tunnel of Dino Dino Mountain, something on the walls happened to catch my eye... Upon close examination, we can see that there's a Stegosaurus etched on the wall. To the right, there's another figure, presumably a dinosaur. Although I'm not positive, I believe it's supposed to be a Pterodactyl.

What Big Feet You Have...
It's hard to miss the giant Bowser face that serves as a tunnel when you're racing on Bowser's Castle... But in all my time racing here, I never really examined it... So, I managed to completely miss the fact that the round castle turrets on either side of Bowser's face are supposed to represent his feet, toes, and even the spiked cuffs that the beast wears.

Standing Symbols...
Just something that I happened to notice on the Waluigi Racer during a video replay... If you're driving this Kart and your rear character falls off, you can see that the back platform has Waluigi's trademark "upside-down L' on it. There's a similar symbol on Donkey Kong's racer, with the "DK" symbol stamped on the back platform.

Wish Upon A Star...
There were two things that I wanted to capture on Rainbow Road, and they both just happened to appear in the same screenshot... The first, is a shooting star that can be seen in the upper middle of the shot. As you travel around the course, you'll often see stars falling from the sky, leaving a sparkling trail of cosmic dust.
The second observation, is the glowing neon Mario Kart text that can be seen in the sky... It seems like a rather well choreographed sampling of aurora borealis.

The Eyes of Bowser Are Upon You...
Just a small detail that I hadn't noticed before, with Bowser's face on the pillar that divides the room of Thwomps. To the right, is a screenshot of what looks like Baby Bowser... The strange part, is that it looks like mushroom and stars are surrounding the bottom of the wall.

Mr. Golden Sun...
People have e-mailed me, saying that the sun looks like it has the face from Mario Sunshine. Every time I looked though, I only saw a pure white ball. But as the screen was fading out after a race on Luigi Circuit, the contrasting colors let me catch a glimpse of the face in the sun. I wonder why they didn't make this detail stick out a little bit more...

Deserted Faces
The sun in the sky has a face, and so does the background scenery in the Dry Dry desert stage. On the left, we can see a pyramid with eyes, while the trees on the right have eyes and noses.

Foggy Findings...
Visible through some of the distant fog on the Mushroom bridge, is Princess Peach's castle. It's not easily noticed, but you can spot it if you look closely to the right just before the first tunnel. To the right of the Princess' castle and after the warp pipe, is a mysterious island off in the distance. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be...

Mushroom City Observations
The streets of Mushroom city are painted with markers. The Koopa shell seems to be painted in quite a number of places, along with various numbers. The Koopa shell here has the number 160 beside it.
A completely unrelated discovery, is something that can be seen off in the distance under the night sky... It's the Mushroom Bridge, with the moon in the background.

Here are two inaccessible areas of the city. One seems to lead to the front of a building, with a lawn beside it. Of course, it's too narrow to drive a kart through.
The second, appears to be some sort of above-traffic crosswalk over some of the streets. It's blocked with a pipe, so again it's just not wide enough to get past.

Just some signage in the city, with a great big 'Do Not Enter' sign where most of the traffic originates from. Anyone who has ventured through there knows that eventually Lakitu picks you up and brings you back to the streets where you're supposed to be.
The right screenshot shows a bunch of arrows leading you on, but in the middle there's a blue neon mushroom. Maybe it's supposed to be a nightclub or something?

Crowd of Characters...
This is a neat little background detail from Waluigi Stadium... The crowd is actually made up of Nintendo characters, repeated over and over around the Stadium. These guys include Mushroom Retainers (green and blue), Shy Guys (red and blue), Sniffits, Goombas, Boo Ghosts, and Kongs.

The one character I can't figure out, is found in the front row of this screenshot, second one in from the left. He (it?) has his arms up, and kinda looks like Big Bird or something. Anyone know who/what it's supposed to be?
