Mario Kart Double Dash:
Mushroom Cup Course Overview

LUIGI
CIRCUIT
Mushroom Cup Race 1
|
The
shape of Luigi Circuit is similar to Luigi Raceway from
Mario Kart 64. There's a lot more going on here though,
with tighter turns with choices including couple quick
shortcuts, a giant Chain Chomp to avoid, and oncoming
racing traffic... |
|
(1)
On the right side of the first real turn on the
track, there's a secret alley way behind the chain chomp.
You'll find double item blocks on this alternate route,
which will come in handy for dealing with rival racers.
There are two shortcuts like this on Luigi Circuit,
and the other one is mentioned at point 4
below.
|
|
(2)
This open straightaway becomes a bit of a collision
zone during the second and third laps. The same stretch
of road is traveled in both directions by karts, so
you're sure to run into your opponents. You can bombard
your oncoming opponents with items here, and ram into
them if you're driving a heavy kart.
|
|
 (3)
A choice to make on both of the end turns, is
whether to cut to the inside and slide with mini-turbos,
or go for the big boost pads on the outside of the turn.
Although you'll get a big burst of speed out of those
outside boost pads, you'll have to travel further out,
costing yourself time. If you're sharp enough to be
able to pull off consecutive mini-turbos throughout
the turns, it's better than the outside route.
|
|
 (4)
Before the final turn that leads to the finish
line, is another small path is open on the right. If
you take it you can cut the corner and score double
items.
Although you're cutting the corner just like in point
2 (above), you're
going straight and being prevented from easily performing
mini-turbos. If you can crank out enough mini-turbos,
the outside route can be faster. But if you can only
do a couple mini turbos (or have a mushroom to boos
through), cutting the corner through the back straightaway
could be quicker. Either way, one of the main reasons
to take either of these two straight sideroutes is to
score double items and unleash them on other karts.

Peach
Beach
Mushroom Cup Race 2
|
This
track is fairly short, which isn't really a surprise considering
it's the second track in the game. Possibly the most hazardous
part of the track, is the actual sandy part of the beach
itself, with the tide rolling in and out, and Cataquacks
running around everywhere... |
|
 (1)
Immediately after the starting line, the track
turns to the right... But if you head left instead,
you can find a warp-pipe that will shoot you up for
double items. This will cost you time, so it's probably
only worth it on the first and second laps. Then again,
if you're desperate enough on the final lap, getting
good double items might be worth the gamble.
|
|
(2)
As you head out onto the actual beach section
of the track, the waves will be pouring in and out of
the beach. If the water level is low, you can head to
the left side of the beach and go over this ramp for
a set of double items.
|
(3)
The sandy scene from paradise is crawling with
beach idiots. They'll run around, and cause you to stop
if they bump into you. Since their bright colors stand
out against the sand, look well ahead and try to avoid
these annoyances. You could also take advantage of the
situation, and scatter traps of bananas and other items
here. Other racers will be frantically trying to avoid
the guys running around, and will be more likely to accidentally
run into some beach trash. |
(4)
On the final turn when you leave the beach,
power slide and cut the corner as tight as possible, using
a mini turbo to give yourself a bit of a boost up the
hill.
There are item blocks scattered throughout this incline,
so you could try and line yourself up to snag one item,
then quickly switch characters so your driver can get
an item as well. |
(5)
Right before the finish line, is a side area
that's easy to miss. With practice, you can slide right
around this water fountain and pick up the double items
that are hidden behind here. |

Baby
Park
Mushroom Cup Race 3
|
It
might sound like a daycare center, but Baby Park can be
one of the most violent and crazy tracks in Mario Kart
Double Dash. At times, it seems more like battle mode
than a racing arena. Since it's such a short course, you'll
be racing 7 laps instead of 3. And in Grand Prix mode,
the items build up and fly around this small arena rather
quickly, and the last few laps are often pure mayhem. |
|
(1)
Possibly the most important of all, look well
ahead on this track.
|
(2)
Look well ahead, and don't let yourself hit
planted banana peels and other hazards. You will no doubt
get hit a few times as the war wages on, so don't add
to your downtime by being hit with avoidable hazards.
Play it cool, and power-slide your way around these obstacles. |
(3)
Since there isn't much of a racing ground to deal
with, you'll have to make those corners count. Power-slide,
and cut the end turns as tight as you can, while using
the mini-turbo.
The brakes can actually help you on these turns... By
lightly tapping the brake if you're sliding to far, you'll
be able to cut in tighter.
|
(4)
Although everyone will have their own personal
strategy, the one I often use for this track is "Run
and Gun". I just blast onward as fast as I can, power
sliding and getting mini-turbos, cutting sharp into the
turns, and going as fast as I can.
All the while, I'm semi-blindly tossing items behind as
I go because opponents will inevitably run into them.
I've found that spending more time watching where my kart
is going while avoiding obstacles is more effective than
trying to take someone else down. I will launch direct
attacks at opponents when the chance presents itself,
of course.

Dry
Dry Desert
Mushroom Cup Final
|
Ah,
the desert... One of the hottest tracks where anything
can happen. The path is relatively simple, but you'll
need to avoid the cacti and quicksand if you want to cruise
to victory. It's the longest track in the Mushroom Cup,
which means you'll have a lot of time to pull off a come-from-behind
victory during the last lap... Or, have a hell of a time
defending the lead if you're in first place. |
|
(1)
The wide areas of the Dry Dry desert track means
there's plenty of room for Karts. But naturally, you
won't want to use this big trail, and will be better
off power-sliding and scoring mini-turbos on the inside
of every turn.
|
(2)
Ah, the open desert wasteland. This means there
aren't a whole lot of barriers to get in the way of firing
red shells at leading opponents. Conversely, if you're
leading the pack, you'd better watch your back. |
|
 (3)
Boba Fett wasn't the only person to be swallowed by
a giant plant in a pit... This Piranha plant awaits
anyone who's unfortunate enough to fall into the pit
of quicksand. Powerslide around the safe edges of the
pit, and don't get to close. Light karts that start
to start getting sucked into the middle of the pit can
often escape by performing a few mini-turbos.
|
|
(4)
The Pokey cacti, who made their debut in Mario Bros
2 are growing here in the desert. Although they're stationary,
they can bend down and get in your way. They can't bend completely
down to touch their bottom part though, so you can actually
drive really close to them and they won't be able to hit you
with their top part - Just be careful you don't foolishly run
into their bottom part.
Shortly after the cacti seen in this photo, is a bumpy area
with sandy hills. There are item blocks on top of some of the
sandy mounds, but heavyweight karts will slow down big time
if they try and get to them. Lightweight karts will still slow
down if they go for the items, but not nearly as much.
|
(5)
This tornado travels its way all over Dry Dry Desert.
You can spot it way of in the distance, but it weaves around
and can be a bit unpredictable. Slide around it, even if you
have to go out into the sand a little bit to avoid being sucked
up. The time you'll lose by driving offroad for a second or
two will probably be better than the time lost of the tornado
gets you. |
