Super Smash
Bros BRAWL
Fanatics
of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros series can hardly seem to wait for
the release of this game... Super Smash Bros BRAWL has
a lot to live up to, following with the amazing success of Super
Smash Bros Melee...
BRAWL promises to be bigger and better than its' predecessors, with
apparently 40-some characters to choose from, and a deeper one player
mode. The familiar formula of Smash Bros is there, with new twists
and new characters. Although it won't be a release title for the Nintendo
Wii in 2006, it's believed that the game will be available sometime
in 2007. |

SMASHDOWN!
|
|
SUPER
SMASH MOVES
Nintendo's preview video for Super Smash Bros Brawl shows
what appears to be a brand new item... It's a smash powerup that
gives your character a unique attack which has been dubbed "Super
Smash Attack".
Characters have always had their unique B button attacks, and
this item is a creative new way to introduce a special new attack
for each character.
Because of the insane power, I'm guessing that this item won't
appear in every match, similar to the all-mighty Thunder Bolt
from Mario Kart.

SUPER
SMASHING MARIO
Whenever Mario collects this smash token in a battle, he unleashes
a devastating fire attack that sets the stage ablaze, causing
anyone in his path to take damage.
|
|
SUPER
SMASHING LINK
Link's Super Smash move is particularly devastating, as his
victim becomes trapped between a pair of Triforces. After the
setup, Link proceeds smash the crap out of his opponent with the
Master Sword.

COOKING
WITH KIRBY
One video clip shows Kirby boiling Mario alive. This leads
most people to believe that this cookin' pot maneuver is Kirby's
"Super Smash Move".

SPECULATIVE
CHARACTERS...
|
There
will possibly be 40 playable characters in BRAWL, but only 10
of them have been confirmed so far. (See Characters)
It's also believed that there 2 or 3 of these combatants will
be non-Nintendo characters. We know for a fact that Solid Snake
will be one of them, but the other guest stars remain a mystery.
Some realistic restrictions do apply here... Third
party characters will be chosen from those who have made a previous
appearance in a Nintendo game... So even though Nintendo is based
in Japan, don't expect to see a special appearance by your favorite
Anime character. My mailbox is full of requests to include these
TV stars, as if I even have a say in the matter...
It's
possible that we might not know the full character roster until
just before the game's release, which isn't necessarily a bad
thing... You don't really want to spoil all the surprises, do
you? (Of course you would, if you had the chance)
The following Nintendo characters are heavy fan favorites for
inclusion in BRAWL. Whether we'll actually see them
in the game or not is another story. Here's a breakdown of possible
fighters, along with the odds:
A
cel shaded Link, inspired by The Legend of Zelda: The Wind
Waker is a popular Internet rumor. He'd certainly be an interesting
character, but a cel shaded dude would look a bit out of place
with everyone else... Then again, Game & Watch looked
out of place in Melee, and he still kicked butt.
Odds: 1/2 |
One
of the most recurring rumored characters is Ridley the dragon
from the Metroid series. Although Ridley is a cool looking
foe, I'd be surprised to see him as a playable character.
While the concept seems awesome, hand-to-hand combat with
a dragon would probably look pretty weird... I'm not sure
if they could make it work.
Odds: 1/4 |
Sonic
definitely meets the criteria of a third party character.
SEGA and Nintendo are on the same side now, so there's no
real reason why Sonic couldn't be included in BRAWL...
But bending to the demands of the fans, it could be seen as
a sign of weakness - Especially since the whole April Fool's
thing was an outside joke created by EGM.
Odds: 1/4 |
I
wouldn't mind seeing Bowser Jr., so long as they come up with
some cool attacks, and prevent him from simply being a mini-clone
of Bowser... This cranky little Koopa is becoming a recurring
character in Mario games, and it's always possible that he'll
be included in BRAWL as well.
Odds: 3/4 |
Many
people seem to reason that if Wario is going to star in BRAWL,
then Waluigi will surely be there too. I certainly can't argue
with that. With the apparently large cast of characters in
BRAWL, I wouldn't be surprised to see Waluigi
too.
Odds: 3/4 |
Nintendo
still owns the rights to Diddy Kong (rumor has it, he signed
for a few million bananas). He's appeared in Mario Kart
Double Dash, but whether or not he signs a contract
to join the BRAWL team remains to be seen. He's
slowly becoming a bit of a Nintendo icon, so I'd say his chances
are decent.
Odds: 3/4 |
Krystal
Fox could have some excellent combos with her staff, and she'd
definitely be a more popular addition than Slippy or Peppy.
As much as I'd like to see Krystal in the game, I still think
she's a longshot.
Odds: 1/4 |

OTHER
STUFF...
|
|
ONLINE
PLAY
As it stands right now, Nintendo hopes to include online functionality
so you can play against players from anywhere and everywhere...
But accomplishing a task like this is easier said than done.
Although it seems as if 2-player online battles are a possibility,
the 4 player online mode has some serious difficulties. The team
will likely do their best to try and achieve 4 player battles...
But they're not going to release a 4 player online battle mode
that's full of bugs and problems... So a 2 player online mode,
should it happen, is nothing to be disappointed about. It will
still be remarkable to connect some of the best players in the
world for a showdown.

SINGLE
PLAYER
Super Smash Bros Melee greatly improved what the original
Super Smash Bros had to offer in terms of the 1-player mode. Melee
introduced the unique Adventure Mode, as well as All-Star Mode,
along with stadium matches like Homerun Contest and Multi-man
Melee.
The future is looking good for Super Smash Bros Brawl, as the
team will definitely be looking to go above and beyond what they've
accomplished before. They're telling us to "expect a very
robust single-player game".
Unlocking trophies, arenas, characters, and special features is
always a great way to encourage players to explore the entire
game to find everything. I'd like to see even more of this stuff
in Super Smash Bros Brawl.

ETA:
2007
Super Smash Bros Brawl was originally slated to be a release
title for the Nintendo Wii, during the Christmas season of 2006.
But now the game has been pushed back slightly, possibly six months
into 2007.
I'd like to give Nintendo as much time as they need with this
game to make it right. More development time means a better game
for us to enjoy, even if we have to wait a little bit... Great
things always come to those who wait...
