TimeSplitters
2 - Goldeneye Lives On
Written by DetErest
In 1997, the first person shooter gaming
world was changed forever. That was the summer when Rareware released
Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64. Goldeneye was an instant hit,
and became one of the most popular games of all time.
Several key members from the Goldeneye team
have since left Rareware, and joined Free Radical Design. As most fans
of Goldeneye already know, the faces for the guard characters in Goldeneye
were actually the heads of the team members. Shown below, are members
of the TS2 team as they appeared in Goldeneye 007:
Stephen
Ellis
The face used for the 'Janus Marine' character in Goldeneye's Multiplayer.
Steve was the 2nd Unit Director for Goldeneye, and produced/directed
TimeSplitters 2. |
David
Doak
The infamous 'Dr. Doak' character from the Facility mission in Goldeneye.
He was responsible for the original screenplay in Goldeneye, and was
a Producer/Director for TS2. |
Karl
Hilton
Goldeneye's Multiplayer 'Russian Infantry' guard had the face of Karl
Hilton, the Scenic Art Director for the game. The phrase 'Happy now
Karl?' can also be found in Goldeneye's memory, likely just an inside
joke that we were never supposed to find... He was the Lead Artist
during TS2's development. |
Graeme
Norgate
The 2nd 'Civilian' character featured the head of Graeme Norgate.
He created the original music for Goldeneye, and was responsible for
the Music and Sound of TS2. |
In
the very first mission of TS2's story mode, we're given an aerial
view of a dam in Siberia. Of course, this mission is nothing at all
like the Dam mission in Goldeneye. But letting the players view a
dam right off the bat was an excellent touch, and immediately brought
feelings of nostalgia. |
This
screenshot shows an area near the starting point of the Siberia mission. |
Just
like Goldeneye, TS2 also has a mission called 'Aztec'. Although in
TS2's Aztec mission, most of the level is played in the jungle as
you try and locate the temple. The temple is shown from outside in
this screenshot. It looks rather impressive, and the clouded sky and
palm trees create a nice effect. |
Shown
here, our character is inside the temple. Note the ancient carvings
on the walls and pillars. Excellent detail. |
|
 In
the Atom Smasher mission, Harry Tipper finds himself strapped to
a chair, with a laser beam about to slice him in half. Nothing like
this appeared in Goldeneye... But as Bond fans will remember,
Agent 007 (Sean Connery) was in this same situation during the movie
Goldfinger. That scene features one of the most famous lines
of all time, with James Bond asking: "Do you expect me to talk?"
With Goldfinger replying "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"
|
|
 When
inside one of the buildings of the Compound arena of Arcade mode,
the walls slightly resemble those of the Archives from Goldeneye...
Of course the green and grey are reversed, and the floor is tiled
with checkers instead of plain squares... It's either a clever tribute,
or a total coincidence.
|
|
 One
of the mysterious Multiplayer Awards earned in Goldeneye 007 was
the "AC-10 Award". It's awarded for a player who grabs
a lot of Body Armor during battle. They made an official comment
on this, revealing that it's a reference to an old video game, where
a character could have an Armor Class of minus ten. This
obscure reference from Goldeneye has also made its' way into TS2.
|
|
It's
always annoying when guards trigger the alarm... You can accidentally
trigger the alarm yourself too. For whatever reason, it took me
a while to notice that the alarms in TimeSplitters 2 very closely
resemble those found in Goldeneye 007.
|
|
Just
something small from upstairs in the guardhouse near the beginning
of the Dam... In the very top room where you go to open up the doorway
to the actual dam itself, there is a map of Russia on the wall.
|
|
 Although
this detail here doesn't deal directly with Goldeneye 007, it does
involve a Nintendo 64 game cartridge... Once again in the Siberia
mission, make your way through the dam and re-surface into the second
building. You can find shelves in the first room past the entrance,
where this little game cartridge will be sitting on a shelf. You
can zoom in and check it out with the Sniper Rifle, and it's in
the shape of a N64 game cart, with the label "Anaconda"...
|
|
Picking
up this little game cartridge will make it appear as an item in
your inventory. If you pause and select the game, you'll take a
break from your mission and be able to enjoy a quick mini-game.
|
In the final credits for TS2, the following
text can be found...
No monkeys were harmed in the making of this game.
Timesplitters will return.
It's good that no innocent monkeys were injured
- Even though they always tend to huck grenades at you...
But it's even better to hear the possibility that TimeSplitters will be
back for another round.
