Between The Quests

Written by Hutz

What a shame - you went through the trouble of getting the Master Sword, and now you find out it needs to be repowered! There's quite a bit of stuff you need to do before going to the next dungeon, though.

The first thing on your to-do list is learn the Ballad of Gales, a special song that can teleport you quickly around the sea. You've probably, at one time or another, been sucked up by a gigantic cyclone with a weird, pinkish monster in it. Find one of those cyclones and bring out your Bow. As it tries to suck you in, start pegging off the monster with as many arrows as you can. With enough hits, the creature will give up and allow you to harness the power of his gales with the Ballad of Gales.

When you play the song, you get to choose from a variety of locations to warp to on the Great Sea. If you've been to Mother and Child Isles before, and talked to the fish there, you'll know that you can't enter the mountain through normal means. Play the Ballad of Gales and warp to Mother and Child Isles (in the northwest area of the map). You'll drop directly into the mountain, where a fairy resides. She'll give you more power to your arrows; now you can tip them with fire and ice!

By going to the two islands that your boat marked on your map, and talking to the fish at those locations, you'll find the locations of two different islands that you must visit to obtain important items. In order to reach the next dungeon, you need to go to Fire Mountain (south of Dragon Roost Island). As you near the mountain, you'll probably notice the volumtuous amount of lava squirting from the top. Whip out your Bow and switch to the ice head with the R button. Shoot the lava geyser at the top, and lava will cease to flow... for a few minutes. Be quick or you'll be caught inside when it erupts again.

Approach the mountain from the northwest and climb towards the east (left) side. As you climb, you'll reach a fork where you can either turn left or go straight ahead. Straight ahead is your goal, as turning left will simply sidetrack you. Near the end is a break in the path. You can either sidle near the wall, or change the wind direction to Northeast and simply fly across with the Deku Leaf. When you get to the very top of the mountain, jump into the volcano.

Before hopping on the platforms supported by lava, defeat as many of the bats as you can so they can't knock you off. Make your way across the platforms and you'll come across two scorpions. Use the Parry attack to defeat them with single blows, and a treasure chest will appear. Within it are the Power Bracelets, which allow you to lift up extremely heavy things like boulders and statues. Lift up the boulder to the side and escape the fiery depths of Fire Mountain.

You don't have to visit Ice Ring Isle quite yet, but it's better to get this out of the way now. Ice Ring Isle is directly east of Southern Fairy Island, so warp there and sail on. As you approach the island, you'll see that a cold mist protects it from intruders. Use the fire-tipped arrow to heat up the source of the mist, which is a dragon head, and start traversing the island from the west. Again, you only have a few minutes to get in and collect the item, so don't screw around.

Walking on this slippery island is pretty awkward, but with some practice you can get the basics down. On the east side of the island is a block of ice that traps a chest with a Treasure Chart in it. If you wish, thaw the ice with a fire arrow and collect the chart, then quickly get back to the west side to climb up again. Carefully walk along the elevated path until it ends. To the side are moving glaciers. Jump from platform to platform and enter the dragon head's mouth.

Go to the right when you fall in the cave, and defeat the bats that fly near. Try to get rid of them all, as they may knock you off the next platform. Next, slide down the path and make sure to steer away from the edge of the platform. At the end is a chest with another important item: the Iron Boots. Put the boots on and walk towards the gusts of wind. With the boots on, the wind can't do anything to you. At the source of the wind is a pitfall where you can defeat a few enemies to collect 100 rupees. Rupees will be of great importance soon, so stock up now...

Enter your boat and head off to Headstone Island (southern marking on your map). Now that you've got the Power Bracelets, you can lift the giant rock that's blocking the entrance. You're not quite in the clear yet, though. Inside the dungeon is nothing but a stone slab with markings on it. Bring out your Wind Waker and learn the song inscribed on the slab: the Earth God's Lyric. You'll also learn that a new sage for the Earth Temple must be awakened. This sage plays the same kind of harp as the Zora who speaks to you right now. Your search will bring you to Dragon Roost Island.

As you enter the main cave area of Dragon Roost, you should notice the sound of someone playing a harp; this is the person you're looking for. In the main area, go through the exit at the top, near the post office. To your right will be a gap that you have to swing across. Bring out your Grappling Hook and cross the pit. Just ahead is the new sage for the Earth Temple: Medli! Conduct the Earth God's Lyric for her and she'll be awakened. Now you're ready to enter the Earth Temple and attempt to power up the Master Sword.
