Dragon Roost Cavern

Written by DetErest

You're faced with a bunch of statue blocks in the first room of the cavern. Grab the furthest block on the left, and pull it back. Next, move the middle block to where that left block used to be, to reveal a doorway.

The next room features two enemies armed with sticks. Destroy them both, and pick up one of the sticks they drop. Light this stick on fire with a burning torch, and use it to light the other two torches in the room. A chest will appear with a key, needed to unlock the room's door.

You'll find yourself in a boarded up hallway. The boards are slightly cracked, so they're easily broken with Link's sword. Behind the boards you'll discover a big room with a lava pit, and a wooden walkway. You'll see a locked door, but you can't open it yet since you don't have a key. Follow the walkway, and drop down where it ends. You'll need to pull a block out from a wall, and climb up on it to reach the rest of the walkway.

When you reach the wooden bridge, take care of the bats that attack you. Next, find a bomb flower growing out of the ground, and use it to destroy the big rock at the end of the second bridge.

The room you enter next has a pit of lava preventing you from reaching the other side. Grab a nearby jar, and huck it into the lava. It will melt, and form a temporary stepping stone on the surface of the lava. When you reach the other side, you can hop across to the treasure chest, and get the map. Continue on to the next room.

Continue on, and you'll find yourself back in that big lava room with the bridge once again. Don't worry, you didn't take a wrong turn. You'll be blocked by a big rock... There are bomb flowers growing on the wall beside the rock. Grab a near by jar or small rock, and toss it at the bomb flowers to make them explode. If your supply of rocks or jars runs out, just head back out the door, and re-enter the room. These objects will reset.

Since you now have the key, you'll be able to unlock the door that you couldn't open before. Head through it, and you'll find another critter armed with a stick. Destroy him, and light the stick on fire to burn the boarded up doorway. There's a switch behind those boards that will open the door with the bars on it.

Now you'll be outside for some fresh air. Climb up, and be prepared for an attack by a large bird. You'll see red hot lava gushing out of the mountain. Approach the ledge, and hold 'A' to lean your back against the wall. Carefully edge your way towards the lava. It'll temporarily stop flowing, so use this opportunity to carefully sidestep your way to the other side.

Hop onto the next ledge, just hanging on by your hands. Move across to the other side. Climb up, and grab a bomb to blow up the big rock to reveal a doorway to get back inside the cavern.

The next room features a pile of blocks. Pull the bottom ones out to make the top ones fall down. Doing so will enable you to climb up, and reach a doorway. In the next room, you'll find the chest with the compass. Grab it, and light a stick on fire. Toss the stick across the room to the boarded up doorway. There's a chest with a key behind the door.

Now it's back outside once again. Jump across the gaps in the stone stairway, and climb to the top. There's a key hidden in an angry bird's nest. Kill the bird and steal his key, then head back into the cavern.

You'll find yourself in a very dark cave now. Luckily there's a torch, and some sticks nearby. Light a stick, and head through the narrow passage, and light the torch at the end to give yourself some light. You'll be attacked by a swarm of bats, so whip out your sword and slice them into pieces. Set the boards on fire to reveal a doorway. Behind those boards, is a door with bars on it. Light the torches there to make the doorway open.

There's a big lava room with a wooden bridge next. Before you cross the bridge, blow up the rock that's sitting on top of a big jar. This jar is a warp point that can take you back to the beginning of the level. You don't want to jump inside though - But you can use it to get BACK to this spot if you're killed and need to start over at the dungeon's beginning.

Cross the bridge, and enter the door. You'll find yourself locked in a room. Kill the enemy, and the door remains locked… The trick here, is that there are other enemies hiding in jars. (How they actually manage to fit inside one of those things is beyond me…) Break all the jars and destroy the hidden baddies. One jar is on top of a shelf, so you'll need to roll into the wall to knock it down. In this room, if you find a stick and set the unlit torch on fire, a chest will appear containing a treasure map. Finding and destroying all the enemies will unlock the door.

The next room is filled with lava. There's an armored creature guarding a small platform. Grab a nearby jar, and lock on to the enemy. Toss the jar at him to stun him, then quickly grab another jar, and hop onto the platform. Throw the jar onto the rising, gushing lava. It'll create a solid platform that you can use to ride upwards like an elevator.

In the next room, you'll find the door to the dungeon's boss. Don't get excited yet though… You still need to get the key to the door, AND an item that'll let you get to get to the final door. Grab some bomb flowers, and blow up the rocks to find another warp jar, and a door that leads outside.

Head outdoors, and RUN up the staircase. You'll want to be quick, because soon after you step onto the stairs, they'll start to break right underneath your feet. You're now close to the top of the mountain. Enter the area, and the door locks behind you.

The little bird girl Medli is here, behind bars. You'll be attacked by her captors, so pull out your sword and stun them with your skills. After you cut them down to size, another enemy will be dropped from the sky. After all the baddies have been eliminated, the door to Medli's jail cell will be unlocked.

Medli will now give Link the Grappling Hook. Use the Grappling Hook, and follow Medli's instructions to swing your way around the mountain. You'll find yourself back to the door that leads inside the cave. Don't head in though. Instead, look around the mountain for a grapple point, and swing your way though a series of these points until you find a higher entrance to the Cavern.

Head across the bridge, and kill the enemies to make a treasure chest appear down below the bridge. To get down there, you need to cut the ropes on the bridge and fall down. Don't worry, there's a safe strip of stone for you to land on directly under the bridge, so you won't end up in the lava.

Head out the door that's across the room from the treasure chest. You'll find a big, flat, circular platform hanging by three ropes. All three ropes need to be cut at the same time, otherwise the platform will tip and you'll fall into the lava. There's a red and white 'bullseye' in the middle of the platform. Stand safely away from the ropes, and charge your sword spin with 'B'. While still holding 'B', move onto the center of the bullseye, and let go. This way, all the ropes will be cut with a single swipe.

You can now ride this platform up and down, on a stream of gushing lava just like an elevator. Let it fall, and hop to the nearby room at the bottom. Jump across the hanging platforms, and up the ladder. You'll reach an area with a barred door, where it seems as if there's no way to continue… But there's a hook hanging from the cavern ceiling. This hook is actually a switch that will remove those bars. Use the Grappling Hook to swing out on it, and jump back to the door that you've now opened.

The next room seems to be a dead end… You swing out with the grappling hook, only to find a ledge that goes nowhere. You need to swing out, and hold 'R' to stop swinging. Change the direction that Link is facing (use the C-stick to help move the camera and adjust your aim), and start swinging again until you build up enough of a power swing to jump to the other area.

You'll find another series of hanging platforms, another grapple point, and finally a door. The door contains a big chest with the boss key inside… But it's guarded with a ring of fire. Link can't hold down the fire switch AND open the chest at the same time… So he has to get some help from an enemy… The enemy in this room is a scorpion like creature with pinchers. When it's ready to attack, it will spreads its pinchers, leaving its head vulnerable. This is the time to strike. When you hit it in this weak spot, it will retreat to its shell. You can then pick it up, and set it on the switch beside the chest to stop the fire. He won't stay inside his shell for too long though, so don't take your sweet time. Grab the boss key from the chest, and head out of the room.

Head back to where you came from… Through the hanging platforms, and grapple points, until you reach that round platform elevator. Ride it up, and head through the nearby door. You'll find yourself in the room with the empty treasure chest. Right beside the chest, is a gushing flow of lava. Throw a vase onto it, and ride up to the top.

Head out the door at the top of the bridge, and you'll be back outside again. Use the Grappling Hook to snag the grapple points to your right, and make your way around the mountain, until you reach the door. You're near the boss room once again… But this time, you have the key, AND the weapon to defeat him with. There are jars outside the boss' room, with fairies inside. Heal yourself, and capture a fairy inside a bottle if you like. It's now time for the showdown against a big angry monster… Hutz tells you how to defeat him in the Boss Strategies page.
